World Team Cup: Mathewson Battles

 Day six of the World Team Cup in Alperdoorn, Netherlands, saw rain delays. 

 

The men’s team lost a close but tough match to China, 2-0. Conner Stroud fell in his singles match to Dong, 6-0, 6-3. Casey Ratzlaff had one of his toughest matches of the tournament in a fierce battle that went all the way to a third set tiebreaker. Ratzlaff lost to Du, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6.

 

The women’s team also lost a tough match today against Japan. Honolulu native Shelby Baron clocked a straight sets win over Tanaka, 6-4, 6-4. Dana Mathewson faced off against 2017 US Open champion Yui Kamiji, but fell short, 6-4, 6-2. In doubles action, Mathewson played with Baron against Kamiji and Tanaka but the pair fell short, 6-4, 6-2.

 

The men will compete against Team Thailand on Saturday and the women will take on the loser between Switzerland and Brazil.

 

The quad team will take on Great Britain on Saturday after its match was postponed due to rain. 

 

“I am proud of the way our teams competed today,” said Joanne Wallen, Director or USTA Wheelchair Tennis. “It was a long day and we have another long day tomorrow. We hope to play our best tennis tomorrow.”
