Seniors Compete at Clay Court Slam
CONCORD, MA -- The 10th annual New England Senior Slam Tournaments continued with the second event of the series, Clay Courts, taking place at the Concord Country Club from July 11-14. The event featured 69 total players, hailing from New England and across the country.
“There were a lot of great highlights, there were some great tennis players out there,” said Tournament Director, Nigel Bentley. “Overall everything went really, really well. It was nice to see so many players participating, and it was a diverse group of players. ”
Many matches lasted for hours in the heat, including a three-and-a-half-hour match in which Walter Beaty defeated top-ranked Richard Klaffky, 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 in the Men’s 70s Singles division. Also in Men’s 70s Singles division, No. 3 ranked Laury Hammel defeated No. 2 Bruce Leibig, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in another classic.
The New England Clay Court Slam boasts the following age divisions: Men’s 60s Singles, Men’s 65s Singles, Men’s 70s Singles, Women’s 75s Singles, Men’s 60s Doubles, Men’s 65s Doubles, Women’s 50s Doubles, Women’s 60s Doubles, Men's 50s Singles, Men's 55s Singles, Men's 75s Singles, Men's 80s Singles, Men's 85s Singles, Men's 50s Doubles, Men's 55s Doubles, Men's 75s Doubles, Men's 80s Doubles and Men's 85s Doubles. The tournament is split into two weekends- the second half of the tournament will take place from August 8-11, also at the Concord Country Club.
The third and final Senior Slam is set for September 12-15 on the grass courts at the Essex County Club.
