Osorio/Wilkins; Flores Diaz/Szavay; Nelson/Beaty Win Doubles Titles To Conclude Aquatennial Tennis Classic
The doubles duo of Andres Osorio and Sion Wilkins won their fourth Aquatennial men’s doubles title, while Sarai Flores Diaz/Blanka Szavay and Nick Beaty/Alexis Nelson won their first doubles titles together to conclude the 2017 Aquatennial Tennis Classic at Canadian Pacific Plaza in downtown Minneapolis.


Top-seeded Osorio and Wilkins, who played doubles together at the University of Minnesota, handled former Gustavus Adolphus All-Americans Kevin Whipple and Nick Crossley 6-1, 6-1. In the women’s event, the second seeded team of Flores Diaz and Szavay defeated former Gophers Julia Courter and Tasha Pintusava 7-5, 7-5. Flores Diaz currently plays at the University of West Florida, while Szavay plays at Northern Arizona. ADVERTISEMENT In mixed, Michigan sophomore Nick Beaty and Cal Berkeley sophomore Alexis Nelson won their first title together with a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (8) victory over the brother-sister pairing of Jessa Richards and Joey Richards. Jessa was an All-American at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, while Joey currently plays at Nebraska-Kearney.

Tony Larson, Alexis Nelson Win Aquatennial Singles Titles
Tony Larson won his ninth singles title and Alexis Nelson her third singles crown on Day 9 of the Aquatennial Tennis Classic. The tournament concludes on Friday downtown on the corner of 2nd Avenue and 5th Street in Minneapolis, weather permitting, starting at 10:00 a.m. with the women’s doubles final, followed by the mixed doubles final and men’s doubles final. Admission is free.

 

Top-seeded Larson defeated second-seeded Alejandro Valarezo 6-2, 6-3 in the finals, while #1 seed Nelson defeated #2 seed Diana Bukajeva 6-4, 6-0.

 

Other semifinal winners included Nelson/Nick Beaty in mixed doubles, Sarai Flores Diaz/Blanka Szavay in women’s doubles and the teams of Andres Osorio/Sion Wilkins and Nick Crossley/Kevin Whipple in men’s doubles.

Tony Larson/Alexis Nelson Advance To Aquatennial Finals
Defending champion Tony Larson and two-time winner Alexis Nelson advanced to the finals once again on Day 8 of the Aquatennial Tennis Classic. Play continues on Thursday downtown on the corner of 2nd Ave. and 5th Street in Minneapolis, weather permitting, starting at 10:00 a.m. Admission is free.


In the semifinals, Larson defeated Tim Larson 6-2, 6-1 in a rematch of the 2016 final. Larson will face second seeded Alejandro Valarezo at 11:30 on Thursday. Valarezo took out Michigan sophomore Nick Beaty 6-3, 6-2 in the other semifinal.

 

The top seed, Nelson had a harder time in defeating Sarai Flores Diaz 10-5 in a third set tiebreaker. Nelson will face #2 seed Diana Bukajeva at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Later, Richards/Richards advanced to the mixed doubles finals in an injury walkover against Niltooli and Nazhone Wilkins due to a knee injury suffered by Niltooli.

Bukajeva Advances To Women's Singles Finals
Rain washed out play downtown, but the action was intense at the Baseline Tennis Center on Day 7 of the Aquatennial Tennis Classic. Play continues on Wednesday back downtown on the corner of 2nd Ave. and 5th Street in downtown Minneapolis, weather permitting, at 8:30 a.m. Admission is free.

 

Diana Bukajeva became the first player to advance to the finals with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kaitlyn Dennis in women’s singles. Other winners, who all advanced to the semifinals, include Nick Beaty/Alexis Nelson, Tony Larson, Harsh Mankad/Michaela Schulz, Sarai Flores Diaz, Mohaned Al Houni/Motasen Al Houni, Andres Osorio/Sion Wilkins and Nick Crossley/Kevin Whipple.

Former Gopher Jeremy Lynn and Bethel University sophomore Hunter Fernelius won two matches today to qualify for the main draw at the 2017 Aquatennial Tennis Classic at Canadian Pacific Plaza on the corner of 2nd Avenue and 5th Street in downtown Minneapolis. Qualifying draw play continues Friday at 8:30 a.m. with seven matches scheduled and admission is FREE.
 

Lynn started the day with a 6-0, 6-4 win over David Crevier and followed that with a 7-6 (5) 6-2 win over former Wisconsin player Michael Sinha. Fernelius upset Jeff Adolf in the quarterfinals 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (8), before winning another three-setter against Aaron Goodman 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (3).

2017 Aquatennial Tournament Preview

Seven-time men’s singles champion Tony Larson (Northbrook, Ill.) and former women’s champion Alexis Nelson (St. Paul, Minn.) highlight the largest field in tournament history at the 2017 Aquatennial Tennis Classic July 10-21 at Canadian Pacific Plaza on the corner of 2nd Avenue and 5th Street next to the light rail tracks in downtown Minneapolis.  
 

Over $7,500 in prize money will be awarded in men's and women's singles, doubles and mixed doubles. The qualifying event is July 10-14, with the main draw starting Monday, July 17 and continuing through the finals on July 20 (men’s and women’s singles) and July 21 (men’s, women’s & mixed doubles). Matches are played weekdays (Monday-Friday) from 8:30 a.m.-7:00 p.m. and admission is free. In the case of rain, matches will be played at the University of Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center.

Larson, who recently relocated to Illinois, returns to his home state looking to defend his title. The former St. Cloud State player has won the Aquatennial men’s singles title seven of the past nine years and enters the 2017 tournament as the top seed. He will open play on Tuesday, July 18 at 10:00 a.m., against an opponent to be determined. Larson will be tested by many newcomers to the event including Division II All-American player Alejandro Valarezo, former top-20 junior player in the Netherlands Sjors van Eck, former Gopher Nic Edlefsen, former Minnesota Class AA champion and current Michigan sophomore Nick Beaty (Wayzata, Minn.) and 2016 finalist and St. John’s two-sport star Tim Larson (Bloomington, Minn.).


Nelson, who just completed her freshman year at Cal-Berkeley, is looking for her third Aquatennial women’s singles title in four years. Nelson plays her first match Wednesday, July 19, at 11:30 a.m., against an undetermined opponent. Other top players in the draw include former Stetson University player Diana Bukajeva (Lake Elmo, Minn.) and Sarai Flores Diaz who played at Mississippi State before transferring to the University of West Florida.


Former Gophers and past champions Andres Osorio (St. Paul, Minn.) and Sion Wilkins (Maple Grove, Minn.) return in the men’s doubles draw, while former Gophers and current Hamline University coaches Julia Courter (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Jessika Mozia (Minneapolis, Minn.) are the top seeds in the women’s doubles. Niltooli Wilkins (St. Paul, Minn.) and her brother Nazhone Wilkins (Burnsville, Minn.) are back to defend their 2014 Aquatennial mixed doubles championship. 


In addition to the matches, there are many other special events scheduled in conjunction with the tournament including:       

  • Current KFAN Radio personality and former two-time Minnesota State AA singles champion Justin Gaard is playing in the mixed doubles qualifying tournament with his sister Megan Gaard who is the women’s tennis coach at St. Catherine’s University on Thursday, July 13 at 11:30 a.m.
  • The USTA is FREE tennis event on Wednesday, July 19 from 5-7:30 p.m. as part of the Aquatennial Loring Park Family Fun Night prior to the Torchlight 5K run and the Centerpoint Energy Torchlight Parade.
  • Men’s Singles Finals on Thursday, July 20 at 11:30 a.m., followed by the Women’s Singles Finals at 1:00 p.m.
  • Women’s Doubles Finals on Friday, July 22 at 10:00 a.m., followed by the Women’s Doubles Finals at 11:30 a.m. and the Men’s Doubles Finals at 1:00 p.m.
