The 2017 USTA Northern League Section Championships start in August with the 55 & Over event August 5-6, followed by the 18W/40M August 11-13, the 18M/40 August 18-20 and Mixed Doubles August 25-27. Winners of each tournament advance to USTA League National Championships at assorted locations in September, October and November.

18 & Over Mixed Doubles
August 25-27, 2017
Life Time Fitness - Lakeville

Congratulations to the winners of the Mixed Doubles Section championships August 25-27 at Life Time Fitness Lakeville. Winners now advance to the National Championships November 3-5 in Mobile, Ala.

The 6.0 team captained by Carl Bigby and Kelly Stordahl out of Life Time Fitness – Bloomington South won the title with a 3-0 round-robin record. ADVERTISEMENT Members of the winning team include Bigby, Amy Bodine, Barb Brown, Doug Brown, Don Crofut, Amy Fong, Kevin Lockwood, Lily Lockwood, Tony Nauth, Jeffrey Nelson, Suzanne Peitso, Rachel Scofield, Stordahl and Charles Sunderland.


The 7.0 team captained by Larry Miller out of Aquila Park in St. Louis Park defeated Gina Carlson and Mark Hassenstab’s team 3-0 in the finals. Members of the winning team included Tony Baxter, Paul Bennett, Steve Bruell, Melissa Dalum, Annette Ellson, Lori Henrich, Hiroki Kaido, Amanda Lewandowski, Miller, Nathan Moseley, Laura Moyneur, Megan Murray-Bennett and Bonnie Niles.


Sharon Lorentz’s
8.0 team from Fred Wells Tennis and Education Center defeated Jeanne Ewen’s team 2-1 in the finals by winning a third-set tiebreaker at the #1 doubles position. Lorentz’s teammates are Caroline Anderson, Jennie Anderson, Marti Estey, Ryan Estey, Cecelia Grass, Rhonda Greene, Sam Hobbs, Chris Kawaters, Jennie Kawaters, Jill Lucas, Thomas Neary, Paul Spors, Carrie Valois, Klenton Willis and Cory Zupfer.


The 9.0 team led by Greg Garritty out of Life Time Athletic St. Louis Park won its flight 3-0. Team members included Brian Biever, Tory Borovsky, Amy Dean, Garritty, Mike Johnson, Heidi Jung, Michael Jung, Bob Marolt, Jim Marolt, Shawn Meschke, Courtney Norman, Shravan Pargal, Astrid Perez and Dan Shannon. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

 

18 & Over Men/40 & Over Women
August 18-20, 2017
Life Time Athletic St. Louis Park/Baseline Tennis Center


Congratulations to all of the winners at the 18 & Over Men and 40 & Over Women Section Championships at Life Time Athletic St. Louis Park and Baseline Tennis Center.

The 3.0 team captained by Jeffrey Nelson out of Life Time Bloomington South won its flight 2-1. Members of the winning team include Nelson, Carlton Bigby, Jake Skobroten, Andrew Larson, James Roth, Don Crofut, Andrew Carlson, Daniel Edwardson, David Sullivan, Christopher Reams and Barry Pinnock. They will travel to Surprise, Ariz., for Nationals October 20-22.
 

The 3.5 team captained by Michael Torres and Morgan White out of Baseline Tennis Center defeated the Yinjie Qui’s team 3-2 in the finals, winning all three doubles positions. Members of the winning team include Jeff Craig, Mike Getzkin, Jeffrey Hall, Edi Hasan, Paul Kotz, Jon Kruse, Damian Langsweirdt, Aniket Murlidharan, Jeffrey Pasko, Todd Pasko, Brian Reidlinger, Bradley Simon, Kyle Syverson, Torres, Cody Werner and White. They will take the court in Surprise, Ariz., for the 3.5 Nationals October 6-8.

Trev Fenner’s 4.0 team out of Baseline Tennis Center defeated Ryan Estey and Sam Hobbs team 4-1 in the finals. Fenner’s teammates included Darren Amundson, Christopher Benyo, Andrew Eklund, Gautam Erande, Nick Halverson, Jim Nam Kim, John Kindseth, Ken Lyons, Andrew McIntyre, Scott Peyton, Jan Prihoda, Austin Povilaitis, Jaylen Schrader and Brennan Vargas. The national tournament is October 13-15 in Surprise, Ariz.


Ken Cychosz’s
4.5 team out of Life Time Athletic Eden Prairie defeated Bruce Gullikson’s team in the finals. Members of the team included Mark Alevizos, Dan Boulay, Michael Coleman, Cychosz, Sam Cychosz, Jon Henning, Pete Heunisch, Bill Kron, Will Prest, Brady Rademacher, Neil Rademacher, Brian Valley, Patrick Van Fleet and Benjamin Walt. They will play at the USTA National Campus in Orlando November 10-12.

Cychosz’s 5.0 team out of Life Time Fitness Bloomington South also won. Members of that team include Bryan Biever, Glenn Britzius, Cychosz, Sam Cychosz, Maalik Konop-Defreitas, Mathan Krishnappan, Scott Larson, Carter Mason, Chuck Merzbacher, Blake Olmschied, Tom Olmscheid, Nathan Parsons, Prest, Paul Schroeder and David Warden. They will play at the new USTA National Campus October 6-8.


In the women’s 40 and Over, the 3.0 team captained by Ruth Eliason and Tara Swanholm out of Minnetonka Tennis Club won its flight 3-0. The consists of Lezlie Bork,  Eliason, Susan Ellis, Carol Friendly, Jody James, Wanda Makis, Dianne Paulus, Lisa Pearson, Emily Starita, Carrie Stolar, Michelle Stork, Swanholm, Sheryl Ann Tufo, Jennifer Warren and Yelena Yan. Fort Lauderdale is their destination for Nationals October 13-15.


The 3.5 team captained by Elizabeth Olig out of Life Time Athletic Oakdale Village defeated Sally Gilcrest’s team 5-0 in the finals. Olig’s teammates include Heidi Andrea, Amy Bodine, Carmen Callies, Gina Carlson, Patti Clifton, Stacy Foerster, Kristina Friedrichs, Sara Hong, Heidi Kelly, Kimberly Mueller,  Carolyn Murname, Jill Sisk, Shelley Wagener and Kim Wolson. They will head to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for Nationals to play on the clay October 27-29


Jodi Kortsha and Wendy Richards’ 4.0 team from Life Time Athletic St. Louis Park defeated Lynda Stout and Kerry Reiling’s team 3-2, winning all three doubles matches in third-set match tiebreakers. Members of the winning team included Andrea Boado, Barb Brill, Barbara Buckley, Gina Carlson, Marie Coyne, Lea Favor, Karen Feagler, Joan Gustafson, Corinne Hoffmann, Kortsha, Virginia Kuberski, Lesley Longval, Janet Loomis, Michelle Morris, Jean Nitchals, Susan Patterson,  Richards, Mia Robillos, Martha Shannon and Sue Woodrich.  Nationals for them will be Orlando and the new USTA National Campus October 20-22.

Congratulations to the following teams who won championships at the 2017 USTA Northern 18 & Over Women and 40 & Over Men League Section Championships at InnerCity Tennis and Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

The 2.5 18 & Over Women, captained by coach Boris Gonikman and Molly Kerr, out of Williston Tennis Center in Minnetonka, Minn.,  won its flight 2-0 and will play at Nationals October 20-22 in Mobile, Ala. Members of the team are Jimen Agullo, Megan Gelhar, Kerr, Janna Schultz, Dunja Sher and Terri Wendt.


The 3.0 18 & Over Women from the Rochester Tennis Connection and captained by Claire Schreiber and Amy Czaplewski won its flight with a perfect 3-0 record. Members of the team include Eileen Anderson, Sun Choi, Czaplewski, Ruth Hoel, Sarah Kerr, Femke Mathot, Dawn Miller, Stephanie Ottenbreit, Jane Peloquin, Schreiber, Daniela Stan, Liz Waugh, Olga Wheeler and Andrea Willems. They will travel to Surprise, Ariz., for Nationals October 20-22.


After winning it’s flight with a 3-0 record, the 3.5 18 & Over team captained by Carol Thies out of Life Time Fitness Bloomington South defeated Marcia Harris’ team from Minnetonka Tennis Center 3-2 in the championship match to advance to Nationals. Members of the team include Miroslava Belik, Marnie Brown, Jo Butler, Annie D’Souza, Jeanne Ewen, Ann Hawkins, Jane Mills, Marilyn Randall, Rachel Reese, Catherine Schneider, Linda Smith, Lauren Smith-Kiewel, Thies, Michele Weddle and Aimee Zweber.
They will take the court in Surprise, Ariz., for the 3.5 Nationals October 6-8.


Julie Ouyang
and Michelle Stein’s 4.0 team, from Life Time Athletic Oakdale Village, is going to nationals after advancing out of its round-robin flight on the matches-won tiebreaker 10-8 and then winning the championship match 5-0. Members of the team include Angie Beissel, Amy Biewen, Miranda Ebner, Laura Edwards, Nikki Johnson, Jennifer Jorgenson, Amy Lamparske, Janet Loomis, Addie Lordemann, Lauren Madsen, Joy Mancini, Karen Neis, Julie Oseid, Ouyang, Kim Perla, Megan Schmidt, Stein, Sarah Suk, Laurie White and Megan Wrobel . The national tournament is October 13-15 in Surprise, Ariz.


The 3.5 40 & Over men captained by Eric Narvaez and Brad Struve out of St. Paul Academy High School won its flight 3-0 and will travel to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for Nationals to play on the clay October 27-29. Members of the team include Craig Engelhart, Nicholas Fisher, Fernando Flores, Tom Galvin, Tim Gunderson, Peter Haan, Rick Hancks, Randall Istre, Jason Karnes, Narvaez, Tony Nauth, Robert Nechal, Edward Richardson, Michael Schneider, Gary Simpson, Michael Streater, Struve, Layland Watson and Jim Winter.


The 4.0 men, captained by Bill Henney and Tim Theisen from Golden Valley Country Club, won the title over Darrin Allen and Jim Kappas’ team from Life Time Athletic Oakdale Village on the matches-won tiebreaker even though they lost to them head-to-head 3-2. The Henney/Theisen team won 15 total matches compared to only 12 for Allen/Kappas. Members of the team include Steve Gamins, Mark Gness, Michael Hayes, Henney, Alex Krol, Mark Lugar, Andrew MacArthur, Boyd Miller, Greg Poling, Jason Punton, James Rick, Brian Roussland, Tom Shustarich, Theisen, Mark Vyvyan and Lewis Yang. Nationals for them will be Orlando and the new USTA National Campus October 20-22.


David Komula’s
4.5+ men’s team from Minnetonka Tennis Club advanced to Nationals after winning the matches-won tie breaker 10-8 over Bruce Gullikson’s Life Time Fitness Bloomington South team. The Komula team will travel to Mobile, Ala., October 20-22 for Nationals. Members of the winning team include Paul Bates, Glenn Britzius, Ken Cychosz, Christopher Gustilo, Brian Johnson, Dan Carlson, Jon Carlson,  Komula, Corey Kotlarz, Karl Lambert, Scott Larsen, Kirk Lithun, Daniel Richards, Justin Seim, Dan Shannon, Scott Swanson, Charles Weigel and David Wolden.

55 & Over Section Championships Results
August 5-6, 2017
St. Paul Academy High School


Congratulations to the following teams who claimed Section championships and now advance to the USTA League National Championships in the 55 & Over Division. The 6.0 and 8.0 teams will play October 27-29 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, while the 7.0 and 9.0 teams will play November 17-19 at the same location. All divisions will be played on clay courts.

 

The 7.0 women's team, captained by Shirley Draz and Cathy Carney out of Life Time Lakeville, won its flight 2-0. Members of the winning team include Laura Abraham, Lori Bellin, Michelle Brennan, Carney, Karen Clark, Draz, Ann Hawkins, Theresa Johnson, Jane Mills and Susan Stombaugh.   

 

The  men's 7.0 team led by Eric Narvaez and Peter Haan won its flight 2-0. The team, which plays at St. Paul Academy High School, consists of Dale Chilton, Craig Englehart, Haan, Rick Hancks, Frank Jossi, Narvaez, Robert Nechal, Ed Richardson, Michael Schneider, Rick Schultz, Gary Simpson, Sai Tong, Jim Winter, Lawrence Wong and Dave Zielinkski.

Carol Seabring and Mary Rolston's women's 8.0 team out of Life Time Athletic Eden Prairie won its flight 3-0. Members of the team include Karen Berg, Ann Boline, Cynthia Kozloff, Lynne O’Reilly, Rolston, Carol, Samuelson, Cindy Schwartz, Seaberg, Mary Snyder, Kathy Spanish, Margret Stanhovsky and Laura Tiffany.

 

Paul Dalton's 8.0 men's team advanced to Nationals after winning its flight 2-0. Members of the team which plays at Baseline Tennis Center are Daniel Cassens, Dalton, Reg Dunlap, David Goodman, William Henneman, Mike Jones, Shuman Lee, Mark Peschel, Raj Pillai, Steven Siegel, Bill Sommers, Steve Sonnenleiter, Tony Stingley, John Weddle and Lonny Wittnebel.
