Congratulations to Minnetonka and The Blake School for winning the Class AA and Class A team titles, respectively, at the 2017 Minnesota Boys State High School tournament in Minneapolis, as well as singles champions Ben van der Sman of East Ridge High School (AA) and Jack Barker of Blake (A). The doubles champions were Nick Aney/Varun Iyer of Rochester Century (AA) and Christopher Hall/Ben Ingbar of Blake (A).
In the finals at Baseline Tennis Center, Minnetonka won a thriller 4-3 against East Ridge. Minnetonka claimed matches at #2, #3 and #4 singles positions and then pulled out an exciting three-setter at #3 doubles to win its second straight team title. Blake had a much easier time in the finals, defeating Virginia 7-0 at the Reed Sweatt Family Tennis Center. In a dominating performance, Blake lost only 13 games total in those seven matches. van der Sman, who is playing tennis at Washington University in St. Louis in the fall, won his first-ever Minnesota state title in comeback fashion 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) over Sebastian Vile of Rochester Mayo. In the third-set tiebreaker, van der Sman was down 5-1, before winning six straight points for the win. Last year, van der Sman defeated Vile in the third-place match. Robbinsdale Armstrong's Nikita Snezhko, who is playing at the University of Iowa next year, won third place in a walkover against Maxim Zagrebelny of Eagan, after Zagrebelny could not play due to a back injury. Minnetonka's Ben Wheaton won the consolation championship.
In Class A, Barker won his first state singles title with a 6-4, 6-2 win over teammate Joe Mairs after earning finalist honors in 2016. Barker was the 2015 state doubles champion with partner Tiernan Foster-Smith, while Mairs won the doubles championship with partner Owen Rickert in 2016. Winona Cotter's Ryan Ortega took third with a 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-1 win over Rochester Lourdes' eight grader Justin Bobo, while Minnehaha Academy's Jose Williamson won the consolation title with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Chris Jelken of Luverne.
Aney and Iyer won their first state titles with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lakeville South's Chase and Hunter Roseth. Aney now joins his sisters Jessie and Katie as Minnesota state tennis champions. Jessie won the girls state singles title in 2011, and then teamed with Katie to win the doubles title in 2012.
Blake's Christopher Hall and Ben Ingbar won their first state doubles title together with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Breck's Matthew and Thomas Metz. Ingbar added the trophy to the state singles title he won last year. It was the first win for Hall, who is only a sophomore. Foley's Logan Scott and Jordan Ziwicki were third with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over St. Peter's Drew Elofson and Rafat Solaiman. Virginia's Connor Croft and Ethan Youso won the consolation title with a 6-7 (2), 7-5, 1-0 (7) over Carter Onkka and Michael Magnusson of Thief River Falls.
