Grand Forks Red River regained the top spot in the state as junior Brooke Kennelly and freshman Anna Caoili won the deciding match at #1 doubles giving Red River a 3-2 win over defending champion West Fargo Cheyenne at Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks, N.D.
Kennelly and Caoili were down 4-3 in the third set before winning three unanswered games to claim a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win. It was Red River’s 15th state championship in the last 16 years with the lone loss coming to Sheyenne last year.
Red River also received victories from Maddie Anderson at No. 2 singles and from Isabel Krogh and Kassidy Johnson at No. 2 doubles to get the win.
In the individual competition, West Fargo Sheyenne freshman Monti Knewtson beat defending state champion Shaelyn Johnson of Grand Forks Red River 7-5, 6-1 to claim her first NDHSAA Girls' Tennis Singles State Championship.
In doubles, the Grand Forks Red River team of Maddie Johnson and Anderson took home top honors for the second-straight year by defeating Reagan Ingstad and Cali Halgrimson of Valley City 6-2, 6-3. It was the third state doubles title for Anderson, whose sister, Samantha, won four individual state titles (two singles, two doubles) and brother, Joey, won three individual titles (one singles, two doubles).
Anderson was named Outstanding Senior Athlete, while Red River coach Greg LaDouceur was named Coach of the Year.
