For 2018, the USTA is launching a new national adult tournament that leverages the NTRP rating system as a way to create level-based competition at the 18 & over and 50 & over age groups.

NTRP national champions will be crowned in men’s and women’s singles and doubles at the 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 levels in both 18 & over and 50 & over age groups. The NTRP National Championships will be held in the spring of 2018 with the 18 & Over Championships April 6-8 at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex, Surprise, Ariz., and the 50 & Over Championships April 20-22 at Academia Sanchez-Casall Florida in Naples, Fla. More about the NTRP National Championships
•    Men’s and women’s 18 & over and 50 & over
•    3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 divisions
•    Singles and doubles
•    Non-elimination draws with two matches per day Friday through Sunday
•    Fast Four: Best-of-three sets to four games, no-ad scoring, tiebreak at 3-3 all
•    Tiebreak is first to 5 points, win by one
•    Eight four-player round robins and that play into four eight-player compass draws

USTA Northern Advancement and Selection Process
USTA Northern has an allotted number of spots available to Northern players into the NTRP National Championship.  Northern’s quota is 1 player in each singles division and 1 two-person team in each doubles division.

To play in the 2018 NTRP National Championships, you must have registered for the tournament and also be the highest ranked eligible player in the 2017 Year-End USTA Northern NTRP level.
1.    The #1 ranked player in the 2017 USTA/Northern Adult NTRP final rankings for singles 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 divisions will be selected for their respective NTRP level in the Adult 18 & Over Division as long as they register for the tournament.
2.    The highest ranked player who is 50 years of age or older, in the 2017 USTA/ Northern Adult  NTRP final rankings for singles 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 divisions will be selected for their respective NTRP level in the  Adult 50 & Over Division as long as they register for the tournament.
3.    The #1 ranked doubles team in the 2017 USTA/Northern Adult NTRP final rankings for doubles 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0 divisions will be selected for their corresponding 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 NTRP level in the Adult 18 & Over Division as long as they register for the tournament.  Both players must be rated at or below given NTRP level.  (An 8.0 ranked 4.5/3.5 combo will not be eligible to play 4.0.)
4.    The highest ranked doubles team who are both 50 years of age or older, in the 2017 USTA/Northern Adult NTRP final rankings for doubles 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0 divisions will be selected for their corresponding 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 NTRP level in the Adult 50 & Over Division as long as they register for the tournament.  Both players must be rated at or below given NTRP level.  (An 8.0 ranked 4.5/3.5 combo will not be eligible to play 4.0.)

Additional Notes On Advancement Process
1.    Self rated players and players with 0.0 rating will not be eligible.
2.    A tie in ranking points will be broken by the following:
a.    Winner of more head-to-head matches in ranking tournament play
b.    Highest winning percentage
c.    Winner of the most number of matches
d.    Player who has beaten the highest ranked player on current ranking list.
3.    Players in the Adult 50 & Over Division must have turned at least 50 in calendar year 2017.
4.    Following calculation of 2017 Final Rankings, USTA Northern will provide national tournament staff a list of eligible players.
5.    Tournament Registration site will be made available to players.
6.    Players will be responsible for online tournament registration.

Alternates
If the highest ranked player/team does not apply to play in the National Championships, alternates will be chosen on the following basis:
1.    In the 2017 USTA/Northern Adult NTRP final rankings, the next highest ranked player/doubles team to register would be selected.
2.    If the ranking list is exhausted with no players/teams registering to play, USTA Northern will not be represented in the event.
3.    If there are no players on a final ranking list, USTA Northern will not will be represented in the event.

Player’s Responsibility in National NTRP Championships
When you accept entry to the National NTRP Championships, it is your responsibility to appear. If you decide to withdraw before the entry deadline, please withdraw from the tournament online and inform the USTA Northern office immediately so that another player can be added to the event.  If it is necessary for you to withdraw from a tournament after the entry deadline, please notify the tournament director and USTA Northern office immediately.
