Karin Young, Hunter Heck Win Major Titles

Congratulations to Karin Young of Apple Valley, Minn., and Hunter Heck of New Brighton,  Minn., as both won major tournaments over ther weekend.

 

Young won both the singles and doubles crown at the USTA National 14s Level 2 tournament at Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus. Young, who was the fifth seed, won five matches on her way to the championship, including defeating the #2 and #6 seeds. In the finals, Young beat Yanci Pal of Riviera Beach, Fla., 7-5, 6-3. In doubles, Young and partner Ria Bhatka of Saratoga, Calif, overcame top-seeded Ryan Kershner (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Sarah Youngberg (New York, N.Y.) 7-6 (5) in the championship match.

Heck took home the ITF Level 4 singles crown in Plantation, Fla., by winning six matches. Heck, who was unseeded, took out the third and the sixth seeds in the tournament before beating second-seeded Blu Baker of Great Britain 4-1, 4-0 in the finals. The match was played with short sets due to rain.
