Q&A with Nate Feldman

February 10, 2021

USTA Northern’s Marc Stingley recently sat down with Minnesota native and WTA Tour Coach, Nate Feldman, to discuss his role as coach to Astra Sharma who is currently competing at the Australian Open. As a graduate of Minneapolis Southwest High School and a University of Minnesota alum, Feldman chats with Stingley about his journey as a professional tennis coach and shares advice for juniors who aspire to work their way up to Division I tennis.

Feldman has coached at nearly every level of the game, providing services to recreational youth players, all the way to professional touring players like Astra Sharma. His own tennis journey began in Minneapolis as a high school athlete of which he reminisced on his time at Minneapolis Southwest High School stating, “It was a great experience and something that I’ve carried with me throughout my whole tennis journey.” Feldman transitioned from his high school career to a Top-10 Division I team at the University of Minnesota where he competed alongside top players in the country, sparking his initial interest for high-level coaching.

With a bachelor’s degree in sport management and a master’s degree focused on coaching and sports marketing, Feldman constructed a path for himself and landed his first collegiate coaching job at Virginia Tech in 2005. He continued to climb the ladder and held positions at top universities around the nation such as the University of North Carolina, Norfolk State, and eventually the University of Oklahoma. With extensive experience in college level recruitment, Feldman lets Stingley in on his advice for juniors wanting to pursue Division I tennis (18:32) where he says, “having a persistent attitude and self-belief are so important.”
