The 2021 Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic

Mission accomplished on another successful Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic! This year we hosted many great events, including a Kids Day, NJTL Day, High School Day, PTR Women’s Because We Can Symposium, GLTF social event and a Wheelchair on-court clinic. Plus, we got to see some fantastic tennis.

We also want to thank all of our valued USTA NorCal members for stopping by our booth and the volunteers who helped support us this year!

Check out a recap of our events below and Click Here to see more photos from throughout the week.

Kid's Day

We had a great turnout with over 200 kids from 12 underserved organizations throughout Northern California participate in the annual Kids Day event at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic this year. Activities took place on the women’s softball field and included, tetherball tennis, obstacle course, miniature golf, serve booth, ax throwing, basketball shootout, ladder climb, spikeball, tennis, soccer shootout, balloon artist, live DJ, and special appearances by Sharky and Sourdough Sam.

Participants also got the chance to meet and ask questions to five professional tennis players who stopped by throughout the two hours for a meet and greet. The on-field activities were capped off by a dance-off featuring Sharky and Sourdough Sam, followed by lunch and then matches on the stadium court.

NJTL Day

This year we had East Palo Alto Tennis & Tutoring (EPATT) participate in the annual NJTL Day at Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic. There were 25 participants of all different ages and abilities.

The day was full of fun, and the participants got to hit with Yulia Putiintseva (currently ranked world #36), and she also signed autographs for them after!

High School Day

We had great attendance and welcomed over 60 students from Jesse Bethel High School, Arcata High School, Los Gatos High School, Mt. Diablo High School, Pittsburg High School, and Willow Glen High School. High School Day featured two courts, one with cardio tennis led by Chris Samuel, and the other with team competition games.

The students also got to hit and have a Q & A session with currently ranked world #44, Magda Linette.

PTR Women’s Because We Can Symposium

This year's Mubadala hosted an interactive and engaging event, the PTR Women’s Because We Can Symposium. Thirteen women attended and started their first step in their journey to becoming certified. This initiative is a partnership between USTA NorCal and PTR to recruit and retain more female coaches.

We are the first pilot program on the West Coast, and there will be two more workshops to follow for this cohort of women.

GLTF Social Event

In honor of keeping with tradition, we hosted 44 members of GLTF out of San Francisco for an evening out at Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic.

They were able to share friendly conversation, have a few drinks, and dinner before one of the best matches of the week on Friday night. It was a night loved by all!

Wheelchair Day

This year six NorCal wheelchair tennis players had the opportunity to participate in an on-court tennis clinic hosted by RL Scott from San Jose at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic.

Following the clinic, wheelchair players David VanBrunt, Mike Applegate, Don Bearden, and Phillip Peabody, put on an exhibition consisting of a 10 point tie-breaker on the stadium court followed by dinner and watching the night matches courtside.
