Southern players and organizations are constantly making their mark in the world of tennis. Here's a list of recent awards, achievements and news in June 2017.

 

Harrison wins French Open men's doubles, beating Young in final

Shreveport, LA native Ryan Harrison (on right in photo above) is a Grand Slam champion. Harrison, along with long-time friend and former LSU player Michael Venus defeated Donald Young and Santiago Gonzalez 7-6(5) 6-7(4), 6-3 in the final. It was the first major victory for either player.

 

Harrison grew up in Louisiana with his brother, touring pro Christian, under the guidance of well-known area coach and father Pat. Ryan also won his first ATP World Tour singles title at Memphis earlier this year. He currently ranked at a career-high No. 41. Earlier this year Harrison and Venus took the Estoril doubles crown. Harrison also won doubles titles with Matthew Ebden at the 2012 BB&T Atlanta Open and at Newport in 2011.

 

The champions went the distance with three-set matches in each of their six matches.The toughest test came in the second round when they downed Marcelo Melo and Lukasz Kubot.

 

Losing out was Atlanta's Young, who is 0-4 in ATP and Grand Slam finals, who of which were in doubles. Currently ranked No. 50, Young reached a career high of No. 38 in 2012.

 

Young and Gonzalez, from Mexico, downed the pair of Daniel Nestor, ranked No. 20, and Fabrice Martin in the first round. The biggest win was over Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares, ranked No. 8 and 9, respectively, 3-6, 7-6(3) 7-6(4).

Eubanks takes Wake Forest Futures

Chris Eubanks, the Atlanta native who plays for Georgia Tech, defeated a former Yellow Jacket to win the Wake Forest Futures at Wake Forest University. 

Earlier this year, Eubanks received ITA all-America honors for the second straight year. He was named the ACC Player of the Year for the second straight season in early May, earning first-team All-ACC honors. 

 

In the final, Eubanks defeated Kevin King 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(6). King played at Georgia Tech from 2009-12 and was named a 2011 ITA All-American. He is from Peachtree City, GA.

King and Eubanks reached the final, losing to the doubles tandem of Brandon Holt/Riley Smith 7-6(4), 6-3.

 

Kwiatkowski advances to Rochester final

Charlotte, NC's Thai-Son Kwiatkowski and Luca Corinteli lost the LB Futures Tournament doubles final to Hugo Di Feo/Mikael Torpegaard 7-6(5), 6-4. The $15,000 tournament was played in Rochester, NY.

 

Kwiatkowski won the NCAA singles championship when playing for the University of Virginia earlier this month. 

 

Beck wins singles, doubles with Navarro in ITF juniors

Chloe Beck, of Watkinsville, GA, won two championships at the ITF International Grass Courts, a junior tournament. She defeated Alana Smith, of Maryland, 7-6(4), 6-3 in the final.

 

Beck teamed up with Emma Navarro, of Charleston, SC, to take the doubles trophy, They defeated Smith and Malkia Menguene 3-6, 6-2 [10-8].

The matches were played at the historic Merion Cricket Club, in Haverford, PA.
