AAPI: Award Winners Nguyen & Heng Talk About Heritage

Mai Nguyen and Nicholas Heng talked about their experiences as an Asian Americans in the video below.

 

Nguyen, who lives in Atlanta, was awarded the 2021 USTA Southern Ozaki-Hastings Junior Sportsmanship Award. She mentioned her Vietnamese background and her grandfather who served in the South Vietnamese Navy during the Vietnam War.

 

Madison, Ala., resident Heng received the 2021 USTA Southern DeWitt Redgrave III Junior Achievement Award (boy). The award goes to the highest ranking junior in USTA Southern. While he listed his pride in his Asian background, he also said he only knows English, the sole  language that isspoken in his home.

 

Both players chatted about their friends, heritage and love of tennis during the 2022 USTA Southern Annual Meeting, conducted in Atlanta. They were recorded on April 23.
