Adult Red Ball Tennis to shine during National Tennis Month
Play in May - National Tennis Month (NTM) kicks off with more than 430 new events with extra excitement this year about more than 190 Red Ball Tennis events being showcased around the South.
USTA Southern is supporting NTM with $300 per event for up to four events and up to four Red Ball Tennis events. If you want to get our on the court during Play In - National Tennis Month, click here to find events in your community.
Adult Red Ball Tennis is an enjoyable and interactive adult social experience designed to be played on a smaller court with lower nets and smaller racquets. It is perfect for those looking for a fun, high-energy, low-impact sport. This is not only a great introduction to tennis, but an opportunity for those needing a smaller space to play the sport using the foam and felt red balls. USTA Southern features two cities growing tennis during May.
Columbus, Georgia
CORTA, located in Columbus, Ga., has a current membership of over 2,300. It is hosting youth and adult Red Ball Tennis events on May 3 and 6 at Cooper Creek Tennis Center. Both kids and adults can join in the fun on May 3, while May 6 is reserved for adults. Racquets, balls, drinks and snacks will also be provided.
CORTA Tennis Engagement and Facility Assistant Coordinator Janell McKenzie explained that they are focusing on Red Ball Tennis.
The May 3 event is being held alongside the Junior Banana Open, a junior tournament. McKenzie’s plan is to engage the juniors’ parents – who are mainly there to watch their children’s matches – and introduce them to Red Ball Tennis between 10-11 a.m.
On May 6, the Red Ball Tennis event will be held in conjunction with Demo Day. CORTA is partnering with Crosscourt Sports, a retail store that supplies racquets and equipment for players trying Red Ball Tennis.
There are 60 events across the Peach State.
Ocean Springs, Mississippi
Jennifer Cockrell, who runs Red Ball Tennis clinics in Ocean Springs, Miss., at St. Martin High School, said National Tennis Month is a perfect way to introduce tennis to adults. Cockrell’s five events are among 29 in Mississippi.
“Any (level) of player can participate in this clinic. The emphasis here is on fun and doable. The events will be very social. So, jump in and play and have fun,” she said.
Cockrell believes the secret ingredient in Red Ball Tennis is the balls and how easy they are to control.
“Red balls are easy to handle and make for good exercise. National Tennis Month is about introducing people to tennis but it can be much more than that. The ball bounces true and everyone has fun!”
Ocean Springs events on May 2, 5 and 8, will be conducted at St. Martin High School on 11300 Yellow Jacket Rd.
