Celebrating John Herring: A Father's Day tribute on and off the court
As Father's Day approaches, it's time to shine a spotlight on the unsung fathers who not only excel in their professional lives but also enrich the lives of their children through shared passions and experiences.
USTA Southern Treasurer John Herring is a noteworthy father figure whose dedication to both tennis and family sets an inspiring example.
Herring’s love for tennis runs deep, a passion instilled in him by his own father at a young age. It's a sport that has not only shaped his character but has also become a cherished bond between him and his children, Andrew, Madie and Kennedy. The Herring family has left an indelible mark on the tennis scene, both locally and nationally. John’s wife, Christy, serves as the USTA Southern Schools/After School Committee Chair.
John was the 2017 USTA Southern No-Cut Coach Starfish Award for his work on the Henry Clay High School teams in Lexington, Ky., and the 2024 President’s Recognition Award. Additionally, he has served as Southern’s treasurer for three terms and is on three USTA committees.
One of the most heartwarming aspects of John's fatherhood is his commitment to playing doubles tennis with his kids. Madie and John played in numerous mixed doubles leagues and tournaments around Lexington during her high school and college years.
Andrew and John have shared the court in numerous USTA father-son tournaments, showcasing not only their skill but also their strong camaraderie. “Andrew and I played in about 12-15 national Level 1 Father/Son tournaments,” John reported. “We made two grass court finals, finished third there one other year and finished fourth at the clay courts one year.”
Kennedy is following in her father's footsteps. As a former state high school doubles champion in Kentucky, she embodies the same passion and drive that defines her father's approach to the game. Together, John and Kennedy have embarked on their own father-daughter USTA tennis journey, having played in two National Father/Daughter tournaments.
“The most memorable match my dad and I have played together is more of a set of matches or match. It is when my family is all together (with dad and I playing Andrew and Madie),” explained Kennedy. “Even in our most frustrating matches I have so much fun playing with my dad,” she added. “Win or lose we have a great time and come off the court for the most part happy.”
What truly sets John apart as a father is his unwavering support and encouragement for his children. From coaching the children during their high school years to cheering the children on in every tournament match, John has always been there, nurturing their talents and fostering their love for tennis.
As we celebrate Father's Day, let's take a moment to honor fathers like John, whose dedication, love and passion enrich the lives of their children in countless ways. Whether they're rallying on the tennis court or cheering from the sidelines, these fathers embody the true spirit of parenthood with selfless, supportive and unwavering love.
So, here's to you, John, and to all the fathers who inspire us, both on and off the court. Happy Father's Day!
