Lloyd Dillon, Sr,. Honored with Proclamation, Court Naming

The late Lloyd Dillon, Sr. was honored on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2020 with a City of New Orleans proclamation.

The proclamation was presented by Councilman Jay Banks of District B. It praised Mr. Dillon as a tennis icon and community ambassador. It further congratulated him for his tireless commitment to diversity.

Court 1 at the Atkinson Stern Tennis Center was also  re-named the Lloyd Dillon Sr. Court. Family and friends were in attendance for this event. The proclamation was presented to his son, Lloyd Dillon, Jr.

Jim Ewers of the LTA Diversity and Inclusion Committee said, “This was a wonderful celebration for a Louisiana tennis ambassador.” Special thanks to Johnathon Ames, manager of the ASTC and a member of the D&I committee, Sonya Armstrong and Matthew Schoenberger of Councilman Banks’ staff.

USTA Southern Mourns the Loss of Lloyd J. Dillon, Sr.

USTA Southern mourns the loss of Lloyd J. Dillon, Sr., a dedicated tennis coach and award-winning volunteer who lived in New Orleans. He passed on Sept. 23, 2020 at the age of 85. Here is his obituary.

James B. Ewers Jr. nominated Dillon for the 2019 USTA Southern Diversity & Inclusion Champion Award. Dillion was honored with the award. Below is the nomination.

I am honored and delighted to nominate Lloyd J. Dillon for the USTA Southern Diversity & Inclusion Champion Award. 

Mr. Dillon has been involved in the sport of tennis since 1972. He is on the Professional Tennis Registry and is also a National Tester for the organization. Over this period, he has provided professional tennis instruction to thousands of people. His audiences have been both racially and ethnically diverse. 

Lloyd has devoted his entire adult life to the sport of tennis. During this time, he has received numerous awards and honors for being a tennis trailblazer and difference-maker. Listed below are just a few of them.

• Humanitarian Award from the Professional Tennis Registry 

• Two-time recipient of the USTA Eve Kraft Community Service Award for his work with youth

• Louisiana Senior Olympics Hall of Fame inductee

• Education Merit Award from USTA Louisiana

• Former USTA Southern representative to the American Tennis Association (ATA)

Lloyd's mentor was Nehemiah Atkinson. Mr. Atkinson was a tennis legend in Louisiana as he is in both the Louisiana Tennis Hall of Fame and the Southern Tennis Hall of Fame. Lloyd's passion for tennis and his tennis teaching abilities have created tennis memories and accomplishments for many people.
