Taylor Townsend reaches No. 1 in doubles, starts clothing line

Please excuse Atlanta resident, Taylor Townsend if she's been a little busy.

Townsend, the 29-year-old mom became the top-ranked doubles player in the world in July, captured three doubles titles this year, including the Australian Open with Katerina Siniakova. She is the first mother to be ranked No. 1 in doubles (her son, Adyn Aubrey, is four years old). However, during a recent interview, she said that it doesn't put any extra pressure on her as she looks to move through the US Open draw.

She also has a winning singles record in 2025 and advanced to the third round in singles of the Cincinnati Open with a well-played 6-2, 6-4 upset of 13th-seed Liudmila Samsonova.

Townsend advanced to the 2025 US Open third round with singles victories over Jelena Ostapenko and Antonia Ruzic. Townsend/Siniakova also won their first-round doubles match.

Her jam-packed 2025 calendar includes 13 singles and 11 doubles events, including the US Open, where she and Siniakova are the top seeds.

Townsend often practices on the Georgia capital’s public courts. She's always willing to sign autographs, take pictures, and offer advice to tennis enthusiasts. She is a firm believer that representation must also involve being accessible.

After winning a 2023 USTA Pro Circuit singles event in Macon, Ga., Townsend said it was a “full circle moment.” She remembered playing tennis in smaller cities like Macon during her junior years.

“She’s just a regular girl who loves to play,” her father, Gary, said of the former No. 1-ranked junior.

New clothing line

If singles and doubles weren't enough, she has also recently become an entrepreneur. Being the top women’s doubles player in the world wasn’t enough to get Townsend a clothing deal, so she started her own line of tennis apparel. She unveiled the apparel, in collaboration with Alexander John, at this year’s French Open.

“I was like ‘Why not take it into my own hands and do my own thing,’ so now that's what I'm doing," said Townsend.

She started working with a creative apparel designer and says more pieces will be released later in 2025. The apparel includes her “TT” initials, and she has been doing numerous appearances to get her logo out to the public.

With a career-high singles ranking of No. 46 reached last year, she prefers not to be labeled a “doubles specialist.” Instead, she emphasizes that she is simply a tennis player.

On the court, she's playing with confidence and happy to be in New York. She made it to the finals of the 2022 US Open women’s doubles with American Caty McNally, so she knows what it takes to have success in the Big Apple.

“It's time to switch into match mode and lock in,” she remarked.
