A conversation with a Texas tennis official, Gloria Dial

Tell us a little about yourself…

How did you get introduced to officiating?

I was introduced to tennis by two ladies I met who were officials.  Jewel Braswell and Joan Fox were officials at several tournaments that I played and they suggested that I become an official.

Why did you become an Official?

I don't like for anyone to know more about what I'm doing than I do.  I wanted to know all the rules so I studied the rules and decided to become an official.

How often do you officiate?

I officiate two to three times a month as Referee.

Where do you officiate?

I officiate at different tennis courts in Houston, Texas

What is your background with the sport of tennis?

I have always loved tennis but I didn't start playing until after I turned 40.  I joined a league in 1994 after talking to a lady that I worked with who was in a tennis league.

Do you think having a background as a player helps you as an official?

Because I am a tennis player, I have a lot more understanding and compassion for officials. I understand a lot of the issues that arise on court because I am a player and I also understand how important it is to have someone to ensure that the game is played fairly.

What would be a piece of advice that you would share with a new official?

I would advise new officials to be sure that they are fair to all players and to always be visible.  It means a lot to players just to know someone is there for them.

What is your favorite part of officiating?

My favorite part of officiating is teaching new players the rules. Also, I love watching the players progress from beginners to intermediate players.

What is the most challenging part of officiating?

The most challenging part of officiating is convincing some players that I am following the rules and that I apply the rules equally to every player.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you on a tennis court?

On my very first time on court as a line judge I was late because I was trying too hard not to appear eager and get there too early.  I didn't know that I was going to get there at least five minutes early.  The official that I was to relieve was very upset.  I think he has forgiven me now.

What does the future hold for your officiating career?

I plan on continuing to Referee as much as possible and as long as I can.
