Texas at 2023 USTA National Women’s Intersectional Team Championships
Texas stood tall this year at the 2023 USTA National Women's Intersectional Team Championships with strong showings at every age division including the 45 & Over team taking first place and the 85 & Over team taking second. Team Texas was lead by captain Monica Salazar.
The Texas 45 & Over team, 3-seed in its division, defeated Southern California soundly 4-1 to secure the championship. Undefeated in matches, Texas was the only team with a winning percentage over 60%. The team was captained by Fredericka Middleton.
The 85s race was tight. Coming into the tournamnet as the one-seed, the Texas 85 & Over team was narrowly defeated by 2-seed, New England. Determined by winning percentage, Texas 57.4% fell short of New England's 69.2% - while the two teams were tied in wins/losses, Texas won fewer overall games. The 85 & Over team was captained by Kathy Langer.
Section pride was on the line as women's teams from across the United States gathered November 6-12 at the Phoenix Tennis Center.
Each year, during the second week of November, the National Women's Tennis Organization sponsors the USTA National Women’s Intersectional Team Championships.
All USTA Sections are invited and encouraged to send teams of their best players representing their area in age categories 35, 45, 55, 65, 75, 80, and 85s. Applications to apply for the 2024 team will be sent to players at our highest competition levels in the spring so.
