Dallas Tennis Event Blends Sport, Culture, and Community for Underserved Youth

What began three years ago with just 15 young players on the courts celebrated its biggest turnout yet at Kiest Tennis Center during the third annual Hispanic Heritage Month Event.

The multi-generational gathering brought together local families, players, and community members for a day centered on culture, inclusion, and the sport of tennis.

Off the courts, the vibrant festival atmosphere came alive as attendees explored more than 15 local vendor booths offering custom apparel and hats, artisan crafts, customized keepsakes, specialty coffee, delicious food, and refreshing drinks.

The festivities featured an energetic lineup of entertainment throughout the day, headlined by interactive Latin dance performances where guests danced along to the rhythms of cumbia, salsa, rumba, and bachata. Families also enjoyed live music, giveaways, interactive outdoor games, bounce houses, and a mechanical bull.

For Sara Lira, the center’s pro shop manager and event coordinator, seeing the event's rapid expansion year over year was both overwhelming and gratifying.

"I'm at a loss for words to see how far this event has come," Lira said. "I am so happy to be a part of something so amazing."

Organized through the center's non-profit framework, the celebration was made possible by a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) grant secured with the support of Carmen Callies, Director of HR at USTA Texas. The initiative aimed to make the sport accessible to broader audiences, particularly local youth from underserved communities.

"When we create a friendly, welcoming environment that the whole family can enjoy, people show up and see that tennis is for them," Callies said. "The work the Dallas Tennis Association does to expand access across all backgrounds is vital. Events celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month highlight what our sport is truly about: community, healthy living, and building something that lasts."
