New Sportsmanship Pledge Launches
Recently, the USTA Texas rolled out a new sportsmanship pledge that we’re excited to tell you all about!
USTA Texas Sportsmanship Committee Chair Debra LaPorte explains how the new pledge came about and what makes it new and important.
Why the new pledge?
DL: The pledge we had was outdated, and too verbose. Too much to interpret. We wanted to make it simple and to the point.
What is the revamp aimed at curing, or what is the intended impact with the new version?
DL: The new pledge is succinct. It allows players to take a moment to understand what they have read, and to resonate with the intent. It is an affirmation that an athlete is disciplined enough to have perspective, maintain poise and do what is best.
Key new points in the new pledge that were left out of the old?
DL: The new version speaks directly to action in a positive manner. The pledge provides a template for responsibility, respect, fair play, and integrity.
Where will the new pledge be implemented?
DL: The inaugural implementation was at the Texas Slam. We had over 100 players take the pledge. Our goal is that every player (adult, junior, competitive, social) as well as coaches, spectators, officials and USTA Texas staff takes the pledge!
Where can players find it?
DL: The new pledge will live on the USTA Texas website and be available throughout the year for anyone to take.
What is the new USTA Texas sportsmanship pledge?
I serve… when I play fair and by the rules.
I serve… when I act with integrity.
I serve… when I treat my opponent with respect.
I serve… when I value the opportunity to compete.
I serve… when I acknowledge and thank those who support me.
I serve… when I am responsible for all my actions.
I serve… when I shake hands and accept victory or defeat with dignity.
