One Texas. One Tennis: Beth Wyszynski
One Texas. One Tennis. is a series highlighting the many faces, voices and experiences of Texas Tennis. Everyone is welcome on the tennis court and when we’re open, we’re at our best. On courts across Texas, every player has a story and those stories show the true diversity and strength of our tennis community. Want to share your story: CLICK HERE
For Beth Wyszynski, the journey on the court is far more than a hobby, it's a celebration of connection, community, and purpose. What began during the COVID-19 pandemic as a search for a shared outdoor activity with her husband at Brookhaven Country Club quickly evolved into a lifelong passion.
Guided by dedicated coaches, welcoming fellow members, and her impactful work volunteering with Dallas Tennis Association’s Adaptive Tennis program, she has discovered that the true power of the sport lies in bringing people together. Off the court, the game has reinforced a grounding personal philosophy: play your own game, stay humble, and uplift others.
USTA Texas: How did you first get involved in tennis, and what kept you coming back to the court?
Beth Wyszynski: During covid, my husband and I were looking for some outside activities. I play golf but my husband doesn’t but we wanted to have an activity that we can do together. I saw an ad for a Brookhaven membership and immediately informed my husband about it. We made the decision to join Brookhaven and take Tennis lessons together. Best decision we’ve ever made! Six years and counting, we’re still having the time of our lives playing Tennis.
USTA Texas: Who in the tennis community has had the biggest impact on your journey? And why?
Wyszynski: As an individual recreational tennis player, the coaches and members of Brookhaven made me love the sport a lot due to the coaches’ dedication to make you a better player and the members who made me realize what a fun sport tennis is!
As a volunteer, the employees of DTA who support the Adaptive Tennis program inspire me a lot to contribute in my own little way to give joy and lots of fun to adults with special needs. Every single moment I spend with them is time well spent full of lasting memories.
USTA Texas: What is one lesson tennis has taught you that you carry with you off the court?
Wyszynski: Play your game and stop comparing yourself to others. As in life, just be yourself, stay humble and kind.
USTA Texas: What is it about the tennis community that helps people from different backgrounds connect?
Wyszynski: The love of the game and the fun you have whether you win or lose. You meet a lot of wonderful people who share the same passion that you have for playing tennis.
USTA Texas: What is one thing we can all do to make tennis more welcoming and inclusive for everyone?
Wyszynski: I believe everybody in the Texas tennis community is doing a great job in welcoming everybody from different backgrounds. The Adaptive Tennis program where I volunteer some of my time is a very great example of being inclusive. Volunteers like me spend time with adults with special needs to do activities like Zumba routines, stretching, obstacle courses and everybody’s favorite, playing Tennis. I’ve been in the program for about a year. When I started, there were participants who could barely hold a racquet and hit a ball. Three months later, you tell them “watch the ball, drop and hit”. The big smiles on their faces when they hit the ball and you tell them “good job” with thumbs up, that’s all that matters. The program worked and we brought joy and fun to everyone.
