Texas Juniors Receive National Junior Sportsmanship Award at US Open

Texas junior tennis players Emma Morgan and Cruz Beltran were recently named national recipients of the 2026 Bill Talbert Junior Sportsmanship Award, presented by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) during an exclusive on-site honor at the US Open in Flushing Meadows, New York.

The prestigious award, named in honor of 1967 Hall of Famer Bill Talbert, a multi-time Grand Slam champion revered for his high standards of integrity, is presented annually by the Board of Directors of the International Tennis Hall of Fame to junior players who exemplify the finest qualities of sportsmanship in tournament play, while maintaining the traditions of fair play, respect, and character both on and off the court. Candidates are nominated from across the 17 USTA sections nationwide.

As part of their recognition, Morgan and Beltran were hosted in the President’s Suite at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center during US Open Fan Week, where they experienced Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day and were formally presented with their awards by USTA leadership.

For both athletes, the experience underscored the values that have defined their competitive journeys across the Texas junior circuit.

Reflecting on her approach to competition, Morgan, of Klein, stressed that respect must extend across all phases of a match, win or lose.

“To me, true sportsmanship means treating everyone with respect no matter what the score is or how the match ends,” Morgan said. “It's being honest and being able to congratulate someone even when you didn't get the result you wanted. I think sportsmanship is about the way you carry yourself throughout the entire match, not just when things are going your way.”

Beltran, of Dallas, emphasized how crucial integrity is in junior tennis, where players frequently serve as their own line umpires.“

“A lot of tennis, especially at the junior level, depends on the players being honest and making their own calls,” Beltran said.
