GEORGETOWN, Texas -- Burleson’s Christian Gonzalez won the Boys 18s singles while Katy’s Ally Lin won the Girls 18s title at The Texas Slam held in Georgetown from June 11-16.
Gonzalez started the tournament as the 7 seed in the draw and climbed his way to the top with a 6-0,6-1 victory over the 2-seed, McGregor's Brendan Boland.
"I went in fighting," Gonzalez said. “I took it one point at a time, not looking at the long run and focused on what I needed to do in the moment."
Lin, the 12-seed, defeated Halvorsen, the tournament’s 5-seed 6-1, 6-1. Coming into the final match as the underdog, Lin had already upset the 3-seed Chloe Zeng (6-2, 6-2), while her opponent Halvorsen defeated the tournament 1-seed Kinaa Graham (3-6, 6-4, [10-8] in the girls’ 18 and over quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Four players claimed victory in both singles & doubles with Georgetown’s Dillon Beckles winning both Boys 16s, Austin’s James Quattro winning both Boys 14s, Katy’s Emily Golovanov winning both Girls 14s, & Lakeway’s Abigail Cizmarik winning both Girls 12s.
After meeting West Lake Hills’ Elliot Wasserman in the doubles final on Wednesday, Beckles had to face off against him once more in the singles final. For Beckles, it was a challenge that stretched out a three-set thriller with a tiebreak early on, but finished with a 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-3 victory over Wasserman.
