Texans at the 2022 US Open

The US Open Grand Slam tournament began on Monday, August 29 and as per usual Texas tennis is being heavily represented in New York City. 

 

Three Texans, Ashlyn Krueger, Fernanda Contreras Gómez and Catherine Harrision fought their way through qualifying to earn spots in the main draw of the event. Harrison, who lives in Austin will face 6-seed Aranya Sabalenka while former USTA Texas junior and 2021 US Open Girls Junior Doubles champion Ashlyn Krueger will face 26-seed Victoria Azarenka.


Contreras Gómez competes for Mexico where she was born, but she grew up in Austin and played for Westlake High School. She's competing in her third-straight Grand Slam tournament draw in 2022.  She's coached by another Texan, legendary South African doubles champ Christo van Rensburg, a longtime resident of Austin. 

 

Texas connections at the US Open are dominated by players with college ties to the Lone Star State. Cameron Norrie, the 7-seed in Men’s Singles who plays for Great Britain, attended TCU, along with other horned frogs Alex Rybakov, and incoming TCU freshman Sebastian Gorzny. Austin Krajicek (Texas A&M,) Jackson Withrow (Texas A&M) and Nathaniel Lammons (SMU) will compete in Men’s Doubles. Arthur Rinderknech (Texas A&M,) who plays for France, competing in Men's Singles. Former Texas Longhorn and reigning NCAA Women’s Singles champion Peyton Stearns faces 28-seed E. Alexandrova in the first round.

Dallas resident and holder of the title for most aces in the history of the ATP Tour, John Isner, returns for his sixteenth US Open. He faces Argentinian Frederico Delbonis in Round 1. 

 

Fresh off of her championship run at the Tennis in the Land tournament in Cleveland, Nicole Melichar-Martinez, along with her partner Ellen Perez will face Madison Brengle and Claire Liu in round 1. Melichar-Martinez trained at the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch Academy in New Braunfels.

 

Accomplished doubles player and Austin-resident, Nicholas Monroe will be competing in his final US Open in 2022, after announcing his intention to retire following the event. 

 

Other competitors include Mckinney’s Liv Hovde, winner of the  2022 Wimbledon Girls Singles championship, and former Texas Junior and ATP tour stalwart Mitchell Krueger. Both Hovde and Krueger lost in qualifying.
