Facility Highlight: Farmersville ISD Unveils New Tennis Complex

FARMERSVILLE, Texas — Beneath the glow of new stadium lights and the promise of a revitalized athletic era, Farmersville ISD officially opened its renovated tennis complex Monday, April 27, 2026, marking a transformation that honors the town’s past while securing its future.

The facility, now officially dedicated as the Marvin J. Schkade Tennis Complex, features a sprawling layout of high-quality courts funded in part by a significant $200,000 investment from the United States Tennis Association (USTA).

The dedication serves as a permanent tribute to the late Marvin J. Schkade, a beloved local educator and former coach whose family has been a cornerstone of the Farmersville community for decades. For his son, current high school head coach Steven Schkade, the ceremony was as much about home as it was about sports.

"We've lived here a lifetime," Coach Schkade said. "My parents served in education here and my brothers and sisters have graduated from here. It's just heartwarming to see all the lives that he and my mom touched over the years recognized in the dedication of the courts."

Schkade noted that the honor was "very unexpected" but that his father would have been "very happy" to see the program's evolution.

Una visión para el crecimiento

The renovation was born out of a necessity to keep pace with a growing student body. Prior to the project, the district struggled with two courts that were too small and lacked total playing surfaces.

"In order to build our program, in order to reach the community and the young people, we had to expand the number of courts that we had," said Farmersville ISD Superintendent Dr. Jason Gomez. "We want our community to be proud, we want our kids to be proud of it, and I think we achieved that."

The newly unveiled complex serves as a premier centerpiece for the district’s athletic programs, boasting eight championship-grade outdoor courts designed for both high-stakes tournament play and daily player development. Each court features high-visibility professional surfacing and integrated LED lighting systems that extend training hours well into the evening.

Beyond the baseline, the facility prioritizes the spectator experience with elevated bleacher seating and improved ADA-accessible pathways, offering fans a panoramic view of the action. With dedicated shaded player benches and upgraded storage amenities, the complex isn't just a venue—it’s a high-performance training hub that provides Farmersville student-athletes with a competitive edge for years to come.

The upgrade isn’t just for varsity athletes. The complex was designed with a "community-first" philosophy, featuring an automated lighting system that allows local residents to use the courts free of charge during evening hours.

"Coaches are actually already partnering with an outside organization to come in and bring tennis to our schools," Dr. Gomez added, noting that the district is also launching tennis at the middle school level to create a pipeline of talent.

State and National Support

The $200,000 USTA Tennis Services Venues Grant that helped fuel the project is part of a larger initiative to increase tennis participation across the country.

Addressing the crowd during the ceremony, Mark Hodge, USTA Texas Community Services Coordinator, emphasized that the new facility serves as a vital gateway for local development.

"Tennis builds health, confidence, and character, but none of that happens without access," Hodge told those in attendance. "Facilities like this grant that access and make those things possible."

Hodge noted that the project’s completion aligns with a surge in interest in the sport, adding that the timing "couldn't be better" as tennis continues to see rapid growth across the state of Texas.

Restoring a Legacy

For Coach Schkade, the new facility is a tool to recreate the atmosphere of his youth, when tennis was a cultural staple of the town.

"We want to fill these courts up in the evenings... during the summer with tournaments, lessons, and leagues," Schkade said. "We just want to grow a passion for tennis here in Farmersville, like what I grew up with in the 70s and early 80s when the entire town was part of tennis."

With the ribbons cut and the Marvin J. Schkade name officially etched into the facility, Farmersville now has the infrastructure to ensure that the next generation of players can make their own memories on the court.
