What Do We Offer?

USTA-sanctioned tournaments are held throughout the section, which you can enter based on age (Open, 35 & Over, 40 & Over, etc.) or ability (NTRP rating). Ranking points are awarded at these events and go toward your section or district ranking.

The USTA also offers tournament play at the national level. You can compete in singles, doubles or family divisions, at all age levels, and on hard courts, clay courts, grass courts or indoor. These tournaments award national ranking points.

Category I tournaments are USTA National Championship “Gold Ball” events. The USTA holds four national championships annually in each adult age division (from age 30 to 90) - one each on clay, hard, grass and indoor surfaces. Singles, doubles and mixed doubles are all offered, as are play in family divisions.

USTA Northern hosts one Category I Tournament - the Men's 65 & Over Indoor National Championships at Life Time Athletic Eden Prairie each August.

Category II tournaments are the next level down from Category I National Championships. They are still considered premier national events but receive fewer ranking points and offer more divisions than Category I National Championships.

Category III tournaments offer alternative formats apart from the traditional best-of-three sets. What participants may encounter are lesser-time-commitment tournaments, non-elimination draws and/or modified scoring formats – all while maintaining the quality level of player for which USTA national events are known.

For those top-level players who have always dreamed of representing the U.S. on the world stage, there are senior international events – the Young Seniors, Senior, and Super-Senior World and Individual Championships. These events are age-division events – ranging from 35 and over to 80 and over – and are the senior equivalents to the Fed Cup and Davis Cup competitions.

In 2018, the USTA launched a new national adult tournament that leverages the NTRP rating system as a way to create level-based competition at the 18 & Over and 50 & Over age groups.

NTRP National Champions are crowned in men’s and women’s singles and doubles at the 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 levels in both 18 & Over and 50 & Over age groups.
