NTRP National Championships

The NTRP National Championships are national adult tournaments that leverage the NTRP rating system as a way to create level-based competition at the 18 & Over and 50 & Over age groups.

Each year, NTRP National Champions are crowned in men’s and women’s singles and doubles at the 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5 levels in both 18 & Over and 50 & Over age groups, as well as at the 5.0 level in the 18 & Over division.

Northern Adult Advancement to 2020 NTRP National Championships

Advancement and Selection Process

How do I get to play in this event?  The USTA Northern Section has an allotted number of spots available to Northern players into the NTRP National Championship. ADVERTISEMENT  Northern’s quota is 1 player in each singles division and 1 two-person team in each doubles division.

Divisions are men’s and women’s 18 & Over singles and doubles  3.0,3.5,4.0, 4.5, 5.0 and men’s and women’s 50 & Over singles and doubles  3.0, 3.5,4.0,4.5.

To play in the 2020 NTRP National Championships, you must register for the tournament and also be the highest ranked eligible player in the 2019 year-end USTA Northern NTRP level.

  1. The #1 ranked player in the 2019 USTA/Northern Adult NTRP final rankings for singles 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 divisions will be selected for their respective NTRP level in the Adult 18 & Over Division.  For the 5.0 division, we will use the Open Singles ranking lists, but only include players rated 5.0 or below.

  2. The highest ranked player who is 50 years of age or older, in the 2019 USTA/ Northern Adult  NTRP final rankings for singles 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 divisions will be selected for their respective NTRP level in the Adult 50 & Over Division.

  3. The #1 ranked doubles team in the 2019 USTA/Northern Adult NTRP final rankings for doubles 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0 divisions will be selected for their corresponding 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 NTRP level in the Adult 18 & Over Division.  Both players must be rated at or below given NTRP level. (An 8.0 ranked 4.5/3.5 combo will not be eligible to play 4.0.) For the 5.0 division, we will use the Open Doubles ranking lists, but only include players rated 5.0 or below.

  4. The highest ranked doubles team who are both 50 years of age or older, in the 2019 USTA/Northern Adult NTRP final rankings for doubles 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0 divisions will be selected for their corresponding 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 NTRP level in the Adult 50 & Over Division.  Both players must be rated at or below given NTRP level. (An 8.0 ranked 4.5/3.5 combo will not be eligible to play 4.0.)

  5. If the same person or team is ranked #1 in both the 18 & Over and 50 & Over categories, the player(s) must choose which tournament he or she would like to participate in and cannot play both events at that level.

Additional Notes On Advancement Process

  1. Self rated players and players with 0.0 rating will not be eligible.

  2. A tie in ranking points will be broken by the following:

    a. Winner of more head to head matches in ranking tournament play;

    b. Highest winning percentage;

    c. Winner of the most number of matches;

    d. Player who has beaten the highest ranked player on current ranking list.

  3. Players in the Adult 50 & Over Division must have turned at least 50 in calendar year 2019.

  4. Following calculation of 2019 Final Rankings, USTA Northern will provide national tournament staff a list of eligible players.

  5. Tournament Registration site will be made available to players.

  6. Players will be responsible for online tournament registration.

Alternates

If the highest ranked player/team does not apply to play in the National Championships, alternates will be chosen on the following basis:

  1. In the 2019 USTA/Northern Adult NTRP final rankings, the next highest ranked player/doubles team would be selected.

  2. If the ranking list is exhausted with no players/teams registering to play, USTA Northern will open up the remaining spots to USTA league players based on the following:

    a. The top 10% in each NTRP level (based on Year End Ratings) will be invited to apply simultaneously via email.  Spots will be awarded to the first responders.

    b. If after the first round, additional spots remain, all remaining players within the NTRP will be invited to apply on a first come, first serve basis.

Player’s Responsibility in National NTRP Championships

When you accept entry to the National NTRP Championships, it is your responsibility to appear. If you decide to withdraw before the entry deadline, please withdraw from the tournament online and inform the USTA Northern office immediately so that another player can be added to the event.  If it is necessary for you to withdraw from a tournament after the entry deadline, please notify the tournament director and USTA Northern office immediately.

Questions in regards to this tournament or the selection process can be sent to Nancy Lundberg; lundberg@northern.usta.com
