2025 League Award Winners
Captain of the Year: Liz VanDerschelden
“What an honor to be nominated for the USTA Captain Award!! Winning this award is not just about me, it’s my entire team. I have put together a group of ladies who I am honored to represent. We all love to play tennis and we play for the love of the sport. We are all honest, fair and kind to our opponents. As a captain, that is what matters most to me.”
Sportsmanship Award: James Wonneberg
“Winning this award means a lot to me! I get fired up out there as much as anyone, but try to keep it all in perspective that we’re playing for fun, and we’re fortunate to be able to compete in our 40s and beyond. What a gift.I really appreciate the USTA PNW community. High level tennis, fun on and off the courts, and great league administrators and tournament directors that make it all possible.”
Sportsmanship Award: Michael Huffman
"I have two favorite moments from this past year. The first, of course, is my 65+ 8.0 team winning sectionals and qualifying for nationals. The second is really the entire 40/55 mixed sectional tournament, where I only played one match, but served as a warmup person for multiple SW Washington teams. I had a great time hitting with many different people and being able to talk, commiserate, and agonize with so many people as we watched matches together was great! The people make the USTA PNW special. Also, being a relatively small section compared to some other parts of the country, it's ncie to be able to touch base every year with a number of players who seem regularly to make it to sectionals."
