Davis Cup, Fed Cup finals off for 2020, 2021 dates announced
The ITF announced Friday the 2021 dates for the Davis Cup and Fed Cup Finals, after it was confirmed that neither event will be held in 2020. The 2020 Fed Cup Finals, which were scheduled for April, had previously been postponed. The 2020 Davis Cup Finals were scheduled for November.
Team USA's men and women had both qualified for their respective finals, and both will keep their places, as the 2020 fields will remain intact for next year's tournament.
The American men, drawn alongside Italy and Colombia for group play, will compete at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals from Nov. 22-28 in Madrid. A total of 18 teams will compete at the event.
The U.S. Fed Cup team will play from April 13-18, 2021, in Budapest, Hungary, where they will face Spain and Slovakia in the 12-team group stage.
Gerard Pique, president of Davis Cup organizers Kosmos Tennis, said: “It’s a huge disappointment for all of us that the Davis Cup Finals will not be held in 2020. We don’t know how the situation will develop in each qualified nation, or if restrictions in Spain will remain sufficiently eased, as such it is impossible to predict the situation in November and guarantee the safety of those traveling to Madrid. This postponement has no long-term bearing on our collective ambitions for the Davis Cup. The ITF and Kosmos Tennis look forward to delivering an outstanding competition in 2021, when it is safe and feasible to do so.”
David Haggerty, ITF President, added this on the Fed Cup decision: “Earlier this year, we took the difficult but necessary decision to postpone the first edition of the new-look Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Finals in Budapest due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While it is regrettable that the finals will not be able to take place this year, we are confident that we will be able to host a superb event in Budapest in April 2021."
Both events plan to return to annual competition beginning in 2021.
