Debutants Michelsen, Giron named to U.S. Davis Cup team to face Chinese Taipei

January 06, 2025

One day after the U.S. took home the 2025 United Cup trophy in Sydney, the American team for the first Davis Cup tie of the new year was revealed Monday.

Davis Cup debutants Alex Michelsen and Marcos Giron join veterans Mackenzie McDonald, Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek on the American squad to face Chinese Taipei in a first-round qualifying tie from Jan. 31 to Feb. 1.

The winner of the tie, to be played on an indoor hard court in Taipei City, will advance to face Korea or Czechia for a place in the Davis Cup Final 8. In a new format, that second qualifying round takes the place of the Davis Cup Finals group stage used in recent years. The seven winners from that stage, to be held in September, will join hosts Italy at November's Final 8 in Bologna.

The U.S. and Chinese Taipei are set to compete for the first time in the Davis Cup, with the latter nation chosen as host by random drawing. The American team is bidding to return to the Final 8 for the second straight year, while Chinese Tapei aims to improve upon a qualifying defeat last season.

The U.S. squad kicking off the 2025 Davis Cup campaign brings a mix of rising talent and veteran team experience.

Michelsen, 20, is currently ranked world No. 41 in singles. A native of Laguna Hills, Calif., he’s reached three ATP Tour singles finals in the last two years and broke into the Top 50 for the first time this summer, becoming the youngest American to do so since Sam Querrey in 2007.

Giron, 31, is the singles world No. 45. A two-time Olympian from Thousand Oaks, Calif., Giron won his first ATP singles title this past summer in Newport and reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 37 in August.

McDonald, 29, is ranked No. 130 in singles but reached as high as No. 37 in the fall of 2023. McDonald, from Piedmont, Calif., made his Davis Cup debut in 2023 and has gone 3-1 in singles across four different ties, most recently the 2024 Finals Group Stage.

Ram, 40, is a former world doubles No. 1 currently ranked No. 28 in the discipline. He’s gone 10-3 in Davis Cup doubles since debuting in 2021. Ram, from Carmel, Ind., is a four-time Grand Slam men’s doubles champion and a two-time ATP Finals doubles champion. He earned his second Olympic medal at the Paris Olympics this past summer, claiming silver with Krajicek.

Krajicek, 34, is also a former world doubles No. 1, currently ranked No. 42. He’s 6-2 in Davis Cup doubles since debuting in 2023. A Tampa, Fla., native, Krajicek won the men’s doubles title at the 2023 French Open and earned his first Olympic medal at the Paris Olympics this past summer with Ram.
