Quads finish second, women third at World Team Cup

Victoria Chiesa | October 02, 2021

Team USA closed out competition at the 2021 BNP Paribas World Team Cup over the weekend with a pair of medals, as the quad team finished with silver as runners-up and the women's team took home bronze on Saturday.

The quad team was set back in the final by a dominant singles performance by the Netherlands, despite an age gap of more than two decades between the two sets of singles players. Eighteen-year-old world No. 3 Niels Vink claimed the first singles match against Bryan Barten, 6-0, 6-1, before 22-year-old world No. 2 Sam Schroder defeated David Wagner, 6-2, 6-1, to give the Netherlands its first World Team Cup quad title since 2008.

After being defeated by the eventual champions, the Netherlands, in Thursday's semifinals, the U.S. women bounced back to seal bronze against Great Britain, 2-0. Dana Mathewson and Emmy Kaiser led the charge to the third-place finish by winning both their singles matches in straight sets: Mathewson was a 6-3, 6-2 winner against Lucy Shuker, while Kaiser took out Cornelia Oosthuizen, 6-3, 6-3.

The men's team finished in seventh place overall, while the junior team finished eighth. After going 2-1 in group play, Team USA's men bounced back from a 2-0 defeat in the 5th-to-8th playoff round against Japan with a 2-0 win against Poland on Sunday; Casey Ratzlaff and Conner Stroud secured identical 6-1, 6-0 singles wins to secure the result. In their final tie of the tournament, the juniors were beaten by Turkey, 2-0, where Maylee Phelps battled in a three-set defeat, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.
