Sophie Chang sweeps titles at 2022 USTA Pro Circuit kickoff event in Vero Beach
After the very first USTA Pro Circuit of the 2022 season, Sophie Chang is already a two-time champion. The 24-year-old American swept both the singles and doubles titles Sunday at the ITF World Tennis Tour W25 event in Vero Beach, Fla., winning the doubles crown with compatriot Allie Kiick.
The seventh-seeded Chang, who hails from Havre de Grace, Md., claimed the clay-court singles title with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 final win over Vera Lapko of Belarus. It was her third three-set win in five matches on the week, including comeback victories over Eleana Yu and Reese Brantmeier in the Round of 16 and quarterfinals. In the semis, Chang got past 18-year-old Elvina Kalieva, the former junior world No. 9, by a score of 7-6, 6-1.
Chanelle Van Nguyen was also a semifinalist in Vero Beach, making it three Americans in the final four. Louisa Chirico and Rasheeda McAdoo reached the singles quarterfinals, along with Brantmeier.
For Chang—who trained at a court on her grandmother's farm during the 2020 lockdown period—it's a second career ITF singles title, adding to her triumph at an Orlando W15 event in 2018. The doubles title was her 11th overall and her third in the last month.
Seeded third in the doubles draw, Chang and Kiick won an all-American final against the No. 4-seeded duo of Christina Rosca and Anna Sinclair Rogers, 6-3, 6-3. The champions also bounced the top seeds in the semis, dismissing Quinn Gleason and France's Marine Partaud, 6-2, 6-2.
With career-highs of No. 274 in singles and No. 136 in doubles, both in 2018, Chang now sits at No. 391 and No. 268, respectively, following her big week in Vero Beach.
Other notable results for Americans on the ITF Circuit last week include:
- Jessica Aney was a singles finalist at the W25 event in Blumenau-Gaspar, Brazil, where Sofia Sewing reached the doubles final.
