U.S. quad team falls to Great Britain on Day 3 of World Team Cup, finishes second in group
The U.S. quad team fell just short in its pursuit of a second round-robin victory at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup on Wednesday, but nonetheless secured the runner-up spot in its pool to reach the semifinals.
After rain halted their doubles match against Brazil late Tuesday after just two games, Bryan Barten and David Wagner returned to the courts early Wednesday to conclude their second Group B tie; the pair lost out to Brazil, 6-2, 6-3, to finish off a 3-0 defeat that began a day prior.
The duo returned to the courts later in the afternoon to face Great Britain, with the latter nation in pursuit of its first win in the group after losing to both Brazil and Israel earlier in the week. As was the case in their victory against Israel on Monday, Barten and Wagner split their respective singles matches, leaving a winner-take-all doubles match to decide the tie. Despite winning the first set against James Shaw and Greg Slade, the U.S. pair was unable to pull off another victory, and the British team rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, [10-5] triumph.
As a result, all three of the U.S., Great Britain and Israel went 1-2 behind group-winner Brazil, but Barten and Wagner did enough in their individual matches within the ties to secure second place and a semifinal berth against the Netherlands, the defending champions.
After a day off on Wednesday, the U.S. men, women and junior teams all return to action on Thursday to close out the group stage. Each team will face France in their respective round-robin pools; the U.S. men and women will look to stay unbeaten this week and improve to 3-0 and 2-0, respectively, while the U.S. juniors have gone 1-1 so far. Each team will be assured of advancing to the semifinals with victories.
