2024 Intermountain Summer Championships Recap

June 20, 2024

Recapping the 2024 Intermountain Summer Championships

As Friday, June 14 dawned brightly across the Mile High City, a collective sigh rose from the eight tennis facilities that would host the 2024 ITA Summer Championships. Unlike last year, when the event was beset by heavy thunderstorms that destroyed the very best-laid plans — pushing matches late into the evening, and also forcing families to book later flights back home — this year’s event would be blessed with nearly perfect weather.

Save for a brief storm on day one that forced some doubles matches indoors, the rest of the tournament enjoyed mild weather and light breezes as more than 220 of the Intermountain Section’s top junior players took the courts to compete for the beautiful glass trophies and the ranking points that came with them.

The focus of this year’s event was sportsmanship, and each player was asked to read and sign the Players’ Code. USTA Colorado and USTA Intermountain are proud of Seth Christian from Las Vegas, NV, and Lillian Moldenhauer from Englewood, CO, who were nominated by fellow players, coaches, tournament staff and officials as the 2024 Sportsmanship Award recipients.

USTA Colorado extends its appreciation to all the players, parents and coaches who helped make the event a success. We would like to also extend our deep appreciation for the host facilities: Cherry Creek High School, City Park (Denver), Colorado Athletic Club Monaco, Denver Tennis Park, Holly Tennis Center, Ken Caryl Ranch House, Lebsack Tennis Center, Lone Tree Tennis Center, and Pinehurst Country Club.

Finally, USTA Colorado thanks our tremendous site staff and tournament officials, without whom this event could not be held.

We look forward to seeing you all back in Denver in 2025.

Colorado players shine on home turf

The event was dominated by the top players, as every division was captured by either the No. 1 or No. 2 seeds, a testament to the accuracy of the World Tennis Number (WTN) which was used by tournament staff for this event.

Colorado entrants shined, capturing singles titles in four events. Nevada and Utah players travelled very well, as the visitors took home three and one championship(s) respectively. Overall, the Centennial state earned 31 trophies, 12 of which were for first place, seven (7) for second, five (5) for third, two (2) for fourth, three (3) for fifth and two (2) for sixth.

In addition to the strong performances of Kasia Chen (Champion, G16) and Nathan Gold (Champion, B18), Colorado boys were exceptionally tough in the 12s and 14s division where the top three places were all won by local players.

In the B12s, Jovian Sherrell (1st), Luka Jovanovic (2nd) and Alexander Sologoub (3rd) stood atop the podium, with Davis Windfeldt collecting fifth place honors. For good measure, Sherrell and Sologoub teamed up to take the doubles championship, besting Davis and his brother, Cameron, who finished second.

The Boys 14s division was another Colorado showcase, as the top four spots were all claimed by local players. Lucas Celechovsky (1st) defeated the two-seed Braylon Desquitado (2nd) in the finals as Kahaan Wani (3rd) bested Marcus Magno (4th) for third place honors. Celechovsky and Desquitado partnered to win the doubles title over Colorado’s Milo Fischer and Jamie Prieto Lin, who would finish second.

In the Girls 16s draw, top seed Kasia Chen doubled up by winning both the singles title (over Meghan Rowley, NV) and the doubles title (with partner Addison Lee, NV).

The Girls 18s doubles championship was captured by Colorado State 5A champion Caroline Daugherty and the 5A runner-up Remy Nguyen.

The Boys 18s title was won by top seed Nathan Gold (Denver) over Utah’s Harrison Pearce, while the doubles title went to Ianmarco Millet (NV) and Nate Tullis (UT) who defeated a Utah duo, Davis Aubrey and Calvin Armstrong.

The Boys 16s final was a duel between Nevada players, as Samuel Pohl defeated Sebastiano Cressi, as was the Girls 12s championship match where Ayenxavia Calugay overcame Heidi Bergin in a battle of the top two seeds. The Girls 14s final was an all-Utah affair as No. 1 Lyla Bergeson won over No. 2 Kamryn Newman. The Girls 18s final was a battle between Nevada’s Jenae Preston and Utah’s Bella Lewis, with Preston earning the championship trophy and Lewis collecting the runner-up honors.
