Making a Racquet in Marquette

April 23, 2020

Though the Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan may be spread out in distance, the tight-knit tennis community is anything but. A couple years ago, tennis enthusiasts from the Marquette Tennis Association (MTA), led by MTA Treasurer Joe Havican and Deb Cook -a Northern Michigan Tennis Association board member (NMTA), banded together with the City of Marquette to restore three of their outdoor courts situated at a local park. Cook and Havican were tasked with the fundraising for the new tennis courts. Raising $40,000 for the DNR Match Funds seemed a daunting task, but what they didn’t realize was how their efforts would ultimately create a chain reaction of good throughout their tennis community.

As Cook and Havican began to fundraise for the renovation, near daily conversations took place about how many lives tennis touches in the UP. One such arose in the summer of 2019 during the MTA’s Annual AB Tournament, usually held to support the local tennis FIT (Fun In Tennis) Camp for junior players. That year though, the proceeds were being directed to the tennis court renovation project. As tournament director, Havican had a conversation on the sidelines with Gary Matson. Matson was a Marquette native and retired Air Force and commercial pilot who returned to the area to spend every summer. At this point, Matson was terminally ill and unable to play in the tournament and expressed his desire to give back to his beloved Marquette tennis community.

Matson died in December 2019 and memorials for him were directed to the MTA by his wife Patty. At this time Havican, who was well connected throughout the school athletic system in his position as the JV basketball coach, remembered an earlier conversation with a high school PE teacher who was looking for a means to supply appropriate racquets for the high school PE classes; the high school courts had been upgraded but their equipment was still outdated.

Cook spoke with NMTA Executive Director, George Lowe, who was able to purchase racquets at a discounted price and she, Havican and Patty made the decision to honor Matson's memory by using the monies gifted in his name to purchase racquets for the Marquette Senior High School, Gary’s alma mater. Havican, Cook and Patty watched in astonishment as donations began to pour in. What started as a dream for the school quickly became reality.

On March 10, representatives from the MTA donated 35 new racquets to the physical education department at the school. Cook says the response from the students was tremendous, and they can’t wait for the opportunity to begin playing again.

Moving forward, Cook affirms that thanks to the generosity of the Matson Family and support from the NMTA, plans to purchase an additional 65 racquets for surrounding schools are already in the works. From one project to the next, the tennis community in the UP is creating opportunities one player at a time.
