National Tennis Month brings 3,300+ participants to Midwest courts!

June 15, 2023

An annual celebration of tennis throughout the month of May—proclaimed National Tennis Month by lawmakers across the U.S.—served more than 3,300 players from the Midwest of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. Together, USTA volunteers collaborated with coaches, facilities, Parks & Recs departments, schools, nonprofits, CTAs and NJTLs to host more than 200 free or low-cost events so kids and adults could try tennis or keep playing!

Participants represented six states and 13 districts across the Midwest Section and attended various types of programs: Cardio Tennis; beginner lessons; the Indy 500 Festival; triples and tacos; Hustle dance lessons; Science, Technology, Engineering and Math opportunities; Blind and Visually Impaired tennis; carnivals; face painting; prizes; DJs and more! We celebrated tennis every way possible!

A recent surge in tennis participation has been driven largely by an increase in players from diverse populations, according to a recent study, with participation increasing by 1 million players in 2022.

“One of the goals of the USTA is to make tennis ‘look like America,’ and to do that, we need to help make tennis available to people from all walks of life, in all communities,” said Brian Hainline, USTA Chairman of the Board and President.

Tennis is the ideal sport for anyone to pick up and start playing! It's safe, easy to learn and good for your health. Our events were organized by dedicated volunteers and incredible community partners who believe in the power of tennis—it's health benefits, accessibility and diversity of the game.

Thank you to everyone who played a special part in National Tennis Month! Your efforts did not go unnoticed. This year's events attracted dozens of news crews including CBS News Detroit16 News Now in South Bend, Indiana, WGN News in Chicago and many more.

Kids learned the basics of the game at National Tennis Month events.

Players looking for follow-up programming were given flyers and information on-site about upcoming camps and tennis events. More opportunities to play here.

"When the event was over, we had four families stay out on the courts playing tennis together, enjoying the game and a beautiful day," said one of our USTA Midwest staff members.

"After our event the adults were all exchanging phone numbers to connect and play again."

Our districts were so happy to meet new players and celebrate National Tennis Month! We hope each participant sticks with the game and gains wonderful memories through it.
