District League Coordinator Spotlight: Viki Congleton
USTA Northern Illinois's own Viki Congleton was recently featured in the National Coordinators & Volunteers Newsletter for her great work with League tennis throughout Northern Illinois. Read below for her take on growing the game.
What are your local plans for bringing back tennis in your local community for the rest of 2020?
We started some outdoor only leagues to service those players who are concerned about playing indoors with the virus. We also offered outdoor weekend leagues, which sadly didn't take off, and are currently trying to build weekday indoor leagues to help our district facility members fill some of their empty court time.
What type of program(s) (advancing or non-advancing, traditional or modified format)?
We are offering progressing leagues but are flexible
What modifications were needed to address concerns of facilities, captains and players about COVID-19?
Wow, that's a question that could take a long time to answer. Because our winter leagues were stopped halfway through, we rescheduled those unplayed matches to begin at the end of June and run through August. The players were delighted that we did that. In order to ensure that they could play as safely as possible we created a web page with all of the facility Covid-19 policies so players would know what to expect when traveling to their matches. We also of course stayed current on state and local policies.
What communication tools did you use to gauge willingness to return to play (direct contact, player surveys, etc.)?
Polled captains via e-mail
Why do you feel your program succeeded (or did not go as planned)?
I guess I feel it succeeded because we didn't give up hope that we could complete our winter season, maybe not as planned before the virus hit but in some capacity. Consequently the teams and players that wanted to continue to play were very appreciative and let us know that they were glad we didn't give up. We are located closely to another district which opted not to complete the remainder of their winter season. There is a lot of crossover play between the two districts so some unhappiness that the other district chose not to complete interrupted the season. We were pretty much the only game in town. We also created a fun bag tag which we distributed to all of the rostered players on the teams that continued and finished out winter season. It was a memento of the times meant to bring a smile.
Add any additional information that might help other coordinators in their planning: *
I think the best thing is to make sure you communicate with your captains and clubs and never underestimate the love that tennis players have for the game. If there is any way that they can find a way to play, safely (hopefully) they will play.
