Illinois

Chicago District President, Brian Dillman

Location/District: Chicago District

 

Term: First year of a two-year term.

 

What is your day job? What do you do on a day-to-day basis: I am the CEO of miha bodytec. We are a wellness and fitness system that uses Whole Body Electro Muscular Stimulation to accelerate strength training. Here is our Instagram page to learn a bit more.

 

Experience with the USTAThis dates me, but I grew up in Dallas, Texas and was a junior volunteer for the Dallas Tennis Association, a nationally ranked junior, certified USTA umpire and tournament director (novice tournaments). Our Dallas team won a gold ball in the, now defunct, National City Team in 1986. I played tennis at the University of Illinois and worked for Wilson Sporting Goods (tennis) for 14 years. During that time, we worked with the USTA to re-sign the US Open tennis ball agreement and the Official US Open Stringer and all the grassroots agreements.

 

Anything in particular you want to address this term? We want to be the Chamber of Commerce for tennis in Chicago, ie: the go-to resource for all things tennis. Other priorities are helping tennis keep its head on straight in relation to pickleball, improving club relationships, reactivating dormant tennis players (former high school and college players) and connecting tennis with all of the great health aspects (Cardio Tennis and more).

 

Hobbies outside of tennisI like to travel and play golf. I also enjoy all racquet sports, health and wellness and cooking (indoors and outdoors).


Mid-South Illinois District President, Rob Vanhootegem

Location/District: Decatur, Illinois, Mid-South Illinois District

 

Term: I am on my third, two-year term as President. Mid-South Illinois is limited to three consecutive two-year terms.

 

What is your day job? What do you do on a day-to-day basis: I worked for the Sherwin-Williams Company for 33 years and am retired.

 

Experience with the USTA:

  • Team captain since 2007
  • Four years as VP of Mid-South Illinois
  • Two years as EVP of Mid-South Illinois
  • Four years as Mid-South Illinois District President
  • 10 years on the League Committee and Grievance Committee

Northern Illinois District President, Michael Lange

Location/District: Northern Illinois District

 

Term: I’m serving my second, two-year term as District President. I also served a previous two-year term from 2002-2006.

 

What is your day job? What do you do on a day-to-day basis: I have been the Manager of Tennis Services at Rush Copley Healthplex since 1997.

  • Former USTA verifier
  • 2004 USTA Midwest Section Cap Leighton Award
  • USTA 10 & Under faculty

Hobbies outside of tennisI like to exercise, travel and play pickleball.


Indiana

Central Indiana District President, Kathryn (Kat) Hawkins

Location/District: Indianapolis, Indiana, Central Indiana District

 

What is your day job? What do you do on a day-to-day basis: I am an attorney. I primarily focus on Estate Planning and Probate work, but try to help my clients in other areas of need too. I have done a fair amount of non-profit work as well.

 

Skills or connections that would relate to committee work: I have LOTS of ideas! And I love seeing those ideas through to fruition. I also enjoy collaborating with others. I am very detail-oriented and believe good data is essential to making decisions. I am also happy to use or make connections that further our goal of promoting and growing tennis. I love tennis and think everyone should have access to tennis, so regardless of the task, committee, etc., I can guarantee I’ll attack it passionately.

Anything in particular you want to address this term?

  • Volunteers: growing the number of volunteers; engage, recruit, and retain volunteers; create and maintain database to communicate with volunteer base
  • Parks: develop partnership with parks departments with an eye towards being their tennis provider for programming and maintenance; goal of creating an endowment for tennis courts in parks

 

Hobbies outside of tennis: If I’m not playing tennis, I can be found near water. Whether I’m sailing, swimming, skiing or relaxing with a book, weather permitting, I’ll be outside. I also love traveling, reading and spending time with friends and family.


Northern Indiana District President, Jay Gosselin

Location/District: South Bend, Indiana, Northern Indiana District

 

Term: First year of two-year term. In the Northern Indiana District, a President is eligible for three consecutive two-year terms.

 

What is your day job? What do you do on a day-to-day basis: I work for Indiana Trust Wealth Management as an Investment Advisor and Retirement Specialist. I have worked in Financial Services for almost 30 years and I enjoy helping people save for retirement and other financial goals.

  • President of the Northern Indiana District 2022-present

  • NTRP for aging players
  • Adopt a WTT/Impact Team Tennis/Tennis On Campus format for players aged 18-30
  • Make tennis affordable for everyone

 

Hobbies outside of tennisI enjoy fishing, golf and spending quality time with my family.


Michigan

Northeastern Michigan District President, David Foster

Location/District: Northeastern Michigan District

 

Term: This will be my seventh term as District President.

 

What is your day job? What do you do on a day-to-day basis: Financial Advisor, Vice President, Wells Fargo Advisors

 

Experience with the USTALast term served as a Delegate-At-Large. I have also served as Midwest League Committee Chair. 

 

Hobbies outside of tennisMy other hobbies are golf, fishing and coaching my two boys hockey teams.


Northern Michigan District President, Sue Smith

Location/District: Northern Michigan District

 

Term: The President is limited to two terms.

 

What is your day job? What do you do on a day-to-day basis:  I am a retired attorney previously employed by the federal government in Washington, D.C.

 

Experience with the USTA:

  • Team captain and women's league participant
  • Three years VP of the Alpine Regional Tennis Association

 

Hobbies outside of tennisI enjoy reading and have significant involvement in many charitable organizations organized around homelessness and literacy.


Southeastern Michigan District President, Tim Crouson

Location/District: Brighton, Michigan, Southeastern Michigan District

 

Term: First year of two-year term, first term as President. Southeastern Michigan is limited to two consecutive two-year terms.

 

What is your day job? What do you do on a day-to-day basis: I am a CRM Administrator at Destination Ann Arbor. In this role, I maintain our sales database and work with our different clients and local partners to promote Washtenaw County, Michigan. I also maintain our relationships with different data providers. Additionally, I run our membership, tourism ambassador program and organize our Annual Meeting. I am currently a Master’s Student in Business Analytics.

  • Formerly served as a facility representative, JTT Coach and Tournament Director
  • Volunteer at numerous district championship events

 

Anything in particular you want to address this term?

  • Competitive opportunities for 18-39 age group
  • Pathway/transition program for tournament and JTT players to find league teams
  • Facility relationships and incentives to run USTA programming, especially in the junior space

 

Hobbies outside of tennis: I am a dog dad to a nearly 4-year-old Schnauzer. Another sport I enjoy is curling and I’m a wannabe reader, but I get distracted easily.


Western Michigan District President, Erik Anderson

Location/District: Western Michigan District

 

Term: Western Michigan is three-year terms. I am in my second year as President and eighth year on the board.

 

What is your day job? What do you do on a day-to-day basis: I am the Association Tennis Director at the YMCA of Greater Kalamazoo. I oversee seven indoor tennis courts at two locations (Maple and Portage) along with four outdoor clay tennis courts. As of 2023, I am becoming certified in Pickleball. I have the certification of multi-team leader within the YMCA of USA education track which meets the credentials to run and operate a facility or branch within a YMCA association.

Experience with the USTA: I started as an official and tournament site director, then became a player, and finally a certified coach through USPTA for the past 14 years. I have served on numerous committees through USTA Western Michigan and worked through the board to become President for 2022-2024.

 

Anything in particular you want to address this term? I want to accomplish greater collaborations between club owners and USTA programs and educate them on win-win opportunities. I want to gain knowledge of what is working and what is not working at facilities, broken down by size.

 

Hobbies outside of tennis: I enjoy ice hockey and golf.  I am pursuing my ice hockey goalie coaching certification through USA Hockey and am a volunteer ice hockey coach.


Ohio

Northeastern Ohio District President, Carolyn Cheverine

Location/District: Northeastern Ohio District

 

What is your day job? What do you do on a day-to-day basis: I recently retired as a corporate finance and governance lawyer for The Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Previously, I have been general counsel and/or corporate secretary for several large public manufacturing companies. I was a C.P.A. with PriceWaterhouse early in my career. With respect to committee work, I often have served on governance, finance, investment and audit committees for nonprofit organizations.

 

Experience with the USTAI joined the USTA Northeastern Ohio Board of Directors two years ago and served as its Treasurer and on the Governance Committee. I recently became the District President.  Prior to that my only connection to USTA was as an Adult League participant for over 30 years.

 

Anything in particular you want to address this term?

  • Require officials at all levels of playoffs
  • Increase playing opportunities for high school and college age students who do not play on their respective schools’ teams but want to play tennis
  • Limit the number of self-rated players who can play on each team (or at least on teams that advance)
  • NTRP for older players

 

Hobbies outside of tennisI enjoy hiking, bicycling, reading and genealogy research.


Northwestern Ohio District President, Doug Rice

Location/District: Sandusky, Ohio, Northwestern Ohio District

 

Term: First year of two-year term. First term as President.

 

What is your day job? What do you do on a day-to-day basisFor the last three years I have been working as a Professional Tennis Official on the USTA Pro Circuit. I have been an active tennis official for more than fourteen years in the Midwest and across the country.

 

Skills or connections that would relate to committee work:

  • I would like to think that I can relate to many people at different levels.
  • Earlier in my professional background, I spent more than twenty-five years in sales and marketing throughout the Midwest in Chicago, Minneapolis/St. Paul and Indiana
  • I also served various management roles at Verizon, Knight Ridder, AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals and Tenneco Automotive
  • After relocating back to Ohio, I served for three years as Vice-President of Marketing and Advertising for an Ohio-based newspaper
  • I attended the University of Toledo

 

Experience with the USTAI came to tennis late as a junior and after a hiatus after school, started playing leagues again and found it to be an important organization within the community.

 

Anything in particular you want to address this term?

  • Helping grow the game of tennis (particularly juniors) in Northwestern Ohio
  • Foster collaborative relationships within the district
  • Work with new and non-traditional organizations to broaden our base

 

Hobbies outside of tennisI like listening to music and watching movies and good programming. I need to rekindle some old hobbies because I don’t have enough to list here.


Ohio Valley District President, Darrin Heinz

Location/District: I live in Dayton, Ohio and represent the Ohio Valley District.

 

What is your day job? What do you do on a day-to-day basis: My family owns and operates two tennis clubs in the Dayton area, Quail Run Racquet Club and Kettering Tennis Center. The only connections that I have to USTA committee work is that I am around tennis every day, but not in a corporate environment.

 

Experience with the USTAI have been a USTA captain for more than 20 years and still play some age group tournaments.

 

Anything in particular you want to address this term?

  • Continue to grow tennis across the district
  • Update the Bylaws to reflect the most current state of the association
  • Continue to be the leader in innovation across the Midwest Section

 

Hobbies outside of tennis: I enjoy hiking in the National Parks with my wife and snow skiing any chance I can get.


Wisconsin

Wisconsin District President, Jeff Dittman

Location/District: Shorewood, Wisconsin, Wisconsin District 

 

Term: First year of two-year term. In the Wisconsin District you’re eligible for two, two-year terms then you must step down for a cycle.

 

What is your day job? What do you do on a day-to-day basis: I am a Finance Manager at Johnson Controls. I manage financials for our government systems group, budgeting/forecasting and tracking daily/monthly financial goals.

 

Experience with the USTA:

  • Founded/played at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Tennis On Campus (TOC) team 2007-2009
  • USTA Midwest TOC Volunteer 2017-2022
  • USTA Wisconsin District President 2021-present
  • USTA Wisconsin District Vice President 2019-2021
  • Organize/run Milwaukee Adult Social League 2018-present
  • Play men’s USTA League

 

Anything in particular you want to address this term?

  • Need for volunteer onboarding class/webinar lead by USTA staff
  • Build better relationships with USTA Staff/Board and district presidents 
  • Get some new people to volunteer in my district

 

Hobbies outside of tennis: I enjoy indoor and beach volleyball as well as pickleball. I also recently became a father and am trying to train my 4-month-old son, Watson, to play tennis. (: Slow progress so far.
