Tennis Star, John Powless, Passes Away at 88

Molly Doehrmann | May 27, 2021

John Powless, a true tennis star, has passed away at 88 years old.

Powless was considered by many to be "tennis royalty" and was one of the world's top-ranked senior tennis players and a past Chairman of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Senior Competition Committee. He dominated his age categories — winning more than 30 USTA singles and doubles titles and ten International Tennis Federation (ITF) singles and doubles titles. Powless attained the number one ranking in the ITF’s rankings in the 75, 80, and 85 and older categories, and as of 2018, he was the top-ranked senior player in the 85 and older category. His success and community involvement earned Powless the Super Senior Service Award and a USTA Volunteer Service Award.

As a strong leader in the Wisconsin community, Powless was a huge Badgers fan. For five years, he coached the University of Wisconsin's tennis team. He also coached teams for the U.S. Dubler Cup, Osuna Cup, and Windmill Cup — as well as the Junior Davis Cup team with Arthur Ashe and Stan Smith.

Powless owned John Powless Tennis Center on Madison’s west side and was actively involved with growing the game of tennis. In 2000, he was inducted into the USTA/Midwest Section Hall of Fame and he was an honorary member of 22 national tennis associations.

As a player, Powless competed at prominent venues around the world and developed lifelong friendships with fellow sports legends Bob Knight and Althea Gibson among others.

In his travels, Powless had opportunities to play on nearly every tennis surface. He was an eight-time USTA Grass Court Champion, a six-time USTA Clay Court Champion, a three-time USTA Hard Court Champion, and a three-time USTA Indoor Champion. In his 2016 biography titled John Powless: A Life Well Played, the author mentions a time when Powless played on courts belonging to the emperor of Japan, and another instance when Powless played at the White House while Ronald Reagan was president.

Above all — Powless was a family man. He was a father, a grandfather, and a friend to many. John Powless was born on August 24, 1932, in Flora, Illinois. He was the oldest son of Cecil and Marie Powless. He grew up a three-sport athlete in high school and later became an All-American tennis player at Murray State.

Powless was also an outstanding basketball player who was hired as an assistant basketball coach for the University of Cincinnati and worked with a team that won back-to-back NCAA titles in 1961 and '62. He went on to be head coach for the University of Wisconsin's men's basketball team from 1969 to 1976, where he coached nine NBA draft choices, the most in program history.

The USTA/Midwest Section would like to send our deepest condolences to John's family. We are so grateful for his many contributions to tennis, his community, and to the world of sports.
