Adaptive Tennis Events Galore Around USTA Missouri Valley
USTA Missouri Valley has hosted a number of adaptive tennis events recently, giving a spotlight to some incredible athletes around the section. Omaha, Neb. played host to two events over the weekend of July 22-24. One weekend prior, the Quad Cities Adaptive Sports Association hosted thier regional All-Stars event in the Quad Cities in Iowa.
These adaptive events are an incredible opportunity to showcase differently abled athletes and their tennis skills. Athletes and volunteers, alike, enjoy every minute of these events that are geared toward friendly competition and camaraderie. Event volunteers especially have these events circled on their calendars every year.
As USTA Nebraska executive director Lisa Thomas noted, "I don’t know who had a bigger smile on their face during the event, the participants or the volunteers.”
Nebraska played host to both the Fred Johnson ALL Stars event and the USTA Missouri Valley Adaptive Championships. The Adaptive Championships were July 22 at Maple Tennis Complex in Omaha. This unique event is a doubles tournament where teams are comprised of one adaptive player and one unified partner.
While the tournament was still heavily focused on fun, there was also a competitive aspect with a chance to advance to the 2022 USTA National Adaptive Tennis Championships on November 4-6, 2022, in Orlando, Florida. Omaha's Matt and Tim Hoffman claimed that honor over Barrett and Craig Matulka, also from Omaha. The Matulka's may still get a shot to go to Orlando as a wild card team. Overall, seven teams competed and had tons of fun at the event.
To round out the weekend in Omaha, the Fred Johnson ALL Stars event made its long-awaited return after a two year hiatus. Koch Tennis Center hosted the weekend of friendly competition. The inaugural event was in 2011 and typically takes place annually, with the exception of the COVID years.
This year, around 50 athletes attended the event. On top of the tennis matches, there was also a Kona Ice Truck, plenty of other games and a barn dance on Saturday night. More tennis and then the closing ceremonies capped off the weekend on Sunday.
And in Iowa, the QCA Adaptive Sports Association hosted its annual All-Stars event. This is another fun-filled event that aims to give adaptive athletes a chance to show off their skills and engage in friendly competition.
