USTA Heart of America Hosts Section Invitational
July was a busy month on the tennis court around USTA Heart of America.
The biggest event was the USTA Missouri Valley Section Championships kicking off with the 65s Invitational at Overland Park Racquet Club.
A total of 28 teams and 345 players came to Overland Park to stake their claim to a ticket to the USTA National 65 & Over Invitational. And competition was fun...and fierce.
In the Women’s 7.0 division, USTA Heart of America’s McGrath team advanced to the semifinals, but was upended by the eventual champions, Janice Roberts out of Tulsa.
USTA Heart of America’s own Ann Crompton’s 8.0 team took the title with a win against USTA Iowa’s Carole Kron/Julie Bruntz team in the final. The Crompton team dropped just one match the entire tournament.
For the men, the 7.0 Division saw Tom Langwell’s USTA Oklahoma team take the championship, defeating USTA Nebraska’s Ronn Winquest team 3-0 in the finals. USTA Heart of America’s Charles Wohlers team reached the semis, but bowed out to the Winquest team.
In 8.0, the Chris Cox team from USTA Heart of America edged the Shaw/Riggan team from USTA Oklahoma 2-1. But before reaching the final, the Cox team had to get through another USTA Heart of America team - Bird, David. In a tightly contested match, the Cox team prevailed 2-1.
Huge thanks goes out to USTA Heart of America tournament organizers Barb Meigs, Terry Miller and Helen Elliott on a great tournament!
Congratulations to all the teams who took part in the invitational. Congratulations are in order for the following teams who will head to Surprise, Arizona for the USTA National 65 & Over Invitational in 2022. For more information on the National 65 & Over Invitational, click here.
