Get to Know USTA Kansas Board President, Cary Morris

Sydney Hamilton | January 30, 2023

It’s an honor for me to introduce you to our new USTA Kansas Board President, Cary Morris! Cary has had a unique road to finding tennis, and her story serves as an inspiration to all who may not have picked up a racquet until later in life.

Get to know Cary in her own words below.

“I grew up in a small country town, and we didn’t have tennis. So, it wasn’t something that was available to me while I was in grade school. I played basketball and ran track in high school and had a college scholarship for basketball and volleyball. I didn’t start playing tennis until I was 50!

“After I had severed my ACL, I picked up cycling, and I was on a ride when I came across Riverside [Tennis Center]. I saw people playing tennis and was intrigued. So, I went by the front desk and asked when the clinics were. From there, I went to Walmart, bought a tennis racquet, and showed up for my first clinic… turns out it was an advanced drill. The people were so nice and very welcoming, though, and that was the beginning of me falling in love with tennis.

“After I played in different drills at different Genesis clubs in my area, I was asked by other players if I was on a team. I wasn’t. That was my introduction to the USTA. I joined a league and haven’t looked back!

“This is my first time being on the Board, and I have great confidence in the future. My goal is to promote and grow tennis across the state while also promoting the USTA. I know the team working me in this new role is very strong and a great group of people. I feel blessed to step into this role with the support of so many great people. I’m so appreciative of Amy, Becky, Kate, and Jaren, and everyone else!

“If you’re new to tennis here in Kansas, I suggest visiting your local Genesis or Riverside Tennis Center. They’re great about bringing people who haven’t played before up to speed through their drills and clinics as a way to introduce them to the sport. McAdams Park staff encourages youth to get into the sport, too. There are so many great programs here. Start seeking out opportunities to learn the game first!

“The tennis community is very welcoming and there’s always someone there to encourage you to get into the sport. I wish I had known about tennis when I was young. It’s a very high-integrity sport.

“Since my introduction to tennis, I’ve gotten all my family involved. And it never would’ve happened if I hadn’t stumbled across Riverside those years ago.”
