Tennis On Campus Fall Invite Returns to Kossover Tennis Center
For many junior players, heading off to college means no longer playing competitive tennis. Luckily, the USTA Tennis On Campus program exists to help these students keep playing after their high school careers end. Tennis On Campus is a program for college club tennis players that was dreamed up and instituted by college students who wanted to keep playing tennis, meet new people, and compete at events, even if they aren’t part of the varsity squad.
Tennis On Campus is making its return to USTA Kansas for the 2023 USTA Missouri Valley Fall Invite, which takes place September 30 through October 1. For the third consecutive year, Kossover Tennis Center in Topeka will host the tournament, which features club teams from 12-16 colleges and universities in the USTA Missouri Valley section, including Kansas State University, which brings a highly competitive group to the event each year.
“This tournament is a unique event that encourages team spirit, camaraderie, and social interaction [that] also incorporates the WTT match/scoring format,” explained Scott Howes, manager of adult play at USTA Missouri Valley. “Each match will consist of the following sets: one male singles, one male doubles, one female singles, one female doubles, and one mixed doubles, with the total number of games won determining the overall winner of the match.
“It's really just an overall fun time for everyone involved,” Howes continued. “In addition, all players who register for the tournament will receive a player gift and the top three teams will receive awards, not to mention bragging rights for an entire year!”
This year’s tournament also marks the launch of a new team photo contest. Players from all teams are encouraged to post pictures from the event on USTA Missouri Valley social media sites and outlets. Keep an eye on section socials to keep up with all the fun!
Nationwide, over 300 colleges and universities participate in the Tennis On Campus program and its more than 100 events that take place each year. Any student enrolled in higher education–both undergraduate and graduate students–can join their school’s club tennis team, though there are eligibility guidelines. If you’re a college student curious about whether or not your school has a Tennis On Campus club, click this link to find out.
