Topeka Tennis Association: A Pillar in the Community

Kendra Wicks | February 25, 2020

An active group of passionate players and strong leaders—that is the Topeka Tennis Association (TTA).

The TTA was founded officially in 1961 by members who wanted to grow the game of tennis and increase play opportunities for the community around them. Today, the organization oversees Kossover Tennis Center and the programs that function through their location.

“We raise funds for this building and facility, as well as junior tennis programs,” said Bob Keeshan, TTA president. “Our goal is to continue to promote tennis in Shawnee County.”

The TTA is currently made up of nine board directors and four officers, along with help from many volunteers. They also work closely with USTA Kansas to provide various opportunities to everyone in the community. Everything from local high school practices to adult league championships to beginner tennis lessons happen at Kossover Tennis Center.

“We are super busy this year, probably busier than we’ve ever been,” Keeshan said. “Last year we had 62 kids in our summer junior program and we’re hoping to get 100 this year.”

The TTA is proud to focus on helping new players and upcoming juniors find their passion for the game. In the past year, they’ve been able to provide free introductory tennis lessons to over 100 new players. This year, they’re looking to donate around $8,500 to junior tennis scholarships.

The members of the organization truly run on bold leadership and passion for the sport.

“All of us play, or have played, tennis. It’s good exercise and a good way to get out frustrations,” Keeshan said. “It’s also very social. We have a couple hundred members who pay dues to be able to come out and play whenever they want to.”

For almost 60 years, the TTA has served, and continues to serve, as a pillar of Topeka tennis.
