USTA Hosts Big Brothers Big Sisters Tennis Event at Crestview Country Club
On September 26, Crestview Country Club in Wichita hosted a special event for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Crestview staff was joined by USTA staff and staff members from Big Brothers Big Sisters welcomed “Bigs” and “Littles” to the club for an afternoon of tennis, camaraderie, and, of course, snacks!
From 12-1:30 p.m., Bigs and Littles bonded during tennis clinics thoughtfully led by tennis pros Regis Fox and Steven Wegner, then enjoyed snacks and chats afterwards. The USTA giveaways were also a huge hit! The USTA lent rackets for the Bigs/Littles to use, as many attendees did not have a racquet. The event was free of charge.
Jaren Glaser, tennis service representative for USTA Kansas and USTA Heart of America, explains the concept behind this event with Big Brothers Big Sisters. “The goal for this clinic was to provide a space for matches [the Bigs and Littles] to learn a skill together in a fun, non-threatening environment from certified coaches who are trained experts in the field and to show that tennis is an accessible option that is available to everyone.”
Glaser went on to share how this event came to be. “Scott Swindler was the catalyst behind the event,” she said. “He reached out to me looking for a way to volunteer in tennis with his busy work schedule, and I found out he had previously been a Big for years, so I decided it would be cool to try to assemble Big/Little tennis clinics with no experience required from the Bigs/Littles.
“Scott was the connection to Big Brothers Big Sisters and was a part of helping schedule the workshop,” Glaser continued. “We are hoping to do more of these workshops at other sites in the future.”
We’d like to thank Scott, Regis, Steven, Jaren, and the members of Big Brothers Big Sisters staff in attendance for making this event memorable for the Bigs and Littles. It’s because of people like you that we can spread the tennis love across our district–and beyond!
