USTA Kansas Awards Banquet

Kendra Wicks | November 26, 2019

The 2019 USTA Kansas Awards Banquet was hosted on Sunday, November 10 at the Wichita Country Club.

Awards were presented to 31 outstanding people and organizations across the Kansas district. These achievements include Janet Glaser winning the USTA Junior Team Tennis Organizer award for both USTA Kansas and USTA Missouri Valley, Nick Taylor receiving the Distinguished Service award at both the district and section level, and the Tennis Family of the Year going to the Joel Phelps family. Several relatives of Phelps had a delayed arrival to the event due to a tennis tournament they were competing in on that day.

The event featured the singing of the National Anthem by former Miss Kansas, Hannah Klaassen, followed by brunch.

“It’s a prestigious event that gives us the opportunity to showcase the people that work so hard and do awesome things in our district,” said Kansas Tennis Service Representative Jaren Glaser.

An annual district meeting was held before the award ceremony, bringing in active leaders in tennis communities from all across the state.

“It was a good, diversified group of tennis directors,” Glaser said. “We had a good turnout as far as directors and a wide variety of directors from clubs, schools and city organizations. We’re trying to figure out the new structure and work on making Kansas tournaments the best they can be.”
