Columbia to Play Host to All-New Junior Circuit Events

Josh Sellmeyer | April 25, 2022

As a young girl, Tricia Vogt recalls driving around her hometown of Bolivar, Mo. alongside her father passing out flyers to tennis facilities and sporting goods stores. The handouts promoted junior tennis tournaments her dad, Richard Crippin, constructed every summer. Crippin would give out T-shirts and prizes at his tourneys, and Vogt remembers them always being a blast.

When Vogt began coaching the boys’ tennis team at Father Tolton High School in Columbia in the spring of 2021, she knew it was a natural progression for her to run USTA junior events as well. Vogt got in touch with Courtney Nesbitt — USTA Missouri junior competition coordinator — and inquired about the possibility.

“I said, ‘I’d like to run a tournament.’ And Courtney said, ‘Why don’t you run three tournaments?’ I was like, ‘Oh, OK.’ That was all her,” Vogt said. “Courtney has just been great getting everything set up for the first time on the website and getting me signed up as a tournament director.”

Vogt and Nesbitt landed on a USTA junior circuit making the most sense. The junior circuit will take place in three separate one-day installments — July 16, September 24, October 15 — at Cosmo Park in Columbia. Vogt said Columbia hosts Level 6 and Level 5 junior circuits but no current circuits that springboard onto those. Her Level 7 non-elimination, round-robin events fill that void.

“We have so many kids learning in all the clubs we have like The Club at Old Hawthorne and Country Club of Missouri,” Vogt said. “A lot of teachers said their kids would be excited. I’m excited to get tennis going again in Columbia.”

The junior circuit events feature divisions for coed 10 & Under orange ball and coed 12 & Under green ball. There are also flights for girls’ 14s and 18s as well as boys’ 14s and 18s. The circuits will be singles play only.

The cost to participate in one of the junior circuit events is $30. Interested individuals can register for the respective one-day events by clicking the following links: July 16; September 24; October 15.

“We have a perfect facility at Cosmo in Columbia for this,” Vogt said. “It’s got the orange ball lines on four of the courts. And then it’s got a famous playground right across from the tennis courts where siblings can play. USTA just resurfaced the courts in 2019.”

Vogt traveled to Kansas City and watched a similar event to better determine whether she could run one — or in this case, three — herself. She’s gauged the interest of parents and pros alike and hopes the new events for the Columbia area will be well-attended. Vogt praised Nesbitt for her behind-the-scenes work getting the events off the ground. Nesbitt will be at the July 16 event to help Vogt run it.

None of this probably happens without Crippin’s influence that began about 35 years ago. Vogt said legendary Southwest Baptist University Coach and Missouri Sports Hall of Famer John Bryant ran tennis camps in the summer. Vogt and her sister frequented these popular camps in their hometown.

Crippin saw the numerous kids in attendance. He knew they needed additional play opportunities, and his well-received junior tournaments were born as a result. Vogt is bringing things full circle by hosting some junior events of her own later this year.

“Back then, there was no email or social media. It’s so much easier now,” Vogt said. “It was a no-brainer for me whenever I started coaching and trying to teach young people who might want to go to Father Tolton. It’s like, ‘Well, where are the tennis tournaments so anybody can learn?’ We need fifth-graders and sixth-graders playing.”
