USTA Missouri 65+ Team Earns 5th-Place Nationals Finish

Josh Sellmeyer | February 13, 2024

A USTA Missouri 65 & Over 7.0 women’s team captained by Ann Vogel had a fantastic showing at USTA League Nationals to cap a remarkable season. Representing USTA Missouri Valley, Vogel’s team went 3-1 at the National Invitational on January 26-28 in Surprise, Arizona to claim a fifth-place finish out of 17 competing squads.

“We were disappointed to have just missed going to the semis by such a slim margin, but the exhilaration of getting as far as we did was reason for celebration,” Vogel said. “The team, their spouses, other family members as well as Karen Smith — a longtime Springfield tennis player who moved to Surprise eight years ago — celebrated with fun-filled recollections of the experience in Surprise.”

Vogel’s group opened play at the USTA League 65 & Over 7.0 National Invitational with a 2-1 win against USTA Southern California, with both victorious courts needing third-set tiebreaks. The team followed that up with a 2-1 win over USTA Florida before dropping a 3-0 decision to eventual national runner-up USTA Northern California.

Vogel’s squad then upended USTA Mid-Atlantic 2-1 to finish in a four-way deadlock for second place with a 3-1 record. USTA Middle States, USTA NorCal and USTA Eastern claimed the tiebreakers to progress to the semifinals alongside eventual national champion USTA Pacific Northwest, with USTA Missouri Valley narrowly missing out on advancement.

Seven players plus Vogel made the trek to the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex to represent USTA Missouri and USTA Missouri Valley. Prior to the crew’s first nationals match, the daughter of team member Judy Hollingsworth, Jana Green-Slyder, gave the team a pep talk. Green-Slyder — who grew up near Springfield — won her division of the World CrossFit Games in 2019 at the age of 50.

The USTA Missouri squad punched its ticket to USTA Nationals by going undefeated at the USTA Missouri Valley 65 & Over Invitational in Overland Park in July 2023. That included a critical win over 2022 section invitational champ USTA Heart of America.

Since then, members of the team have practiced, played in other USTA Missouri leagues, participated in clinics and attended private lessons to sharpen their game. Though one of the smallest-sized teams at USTA Nationals, the crew posted terrific results and enjoyed spending time together. Vogel asked attending players to detail some of their thoughts on nationals, and here is part of what each shared:

Susy Barr: “Nationals was an unbelievable experience, especially since I had the opportunity to play in two National Championships this year. … The teams worked hard. I feel like all the years of playing have paid off this year.”

Polly Egbert: “The setting and the weather were ideal. My most memorable moment was when my partner and I were losing, but I just noticed the sunshine, the gorgeous atmosphere and enjoyed myself. I really liked playing against people from all over the U.S. and had a great time watching and visiting. I feel so blessed to have been able to make this trip and participate in this well-run invitational tournament.”

Carol Goldstein: “I am grateful for all (Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex) has done to host this tournament for seniors and for recognizing the importance of providing seniors with competitive tennis opportunities. The staff and volunteers made the tournament fun and enjoyable. The food was excellent and thoughtful. The daily scheduled matches went on in a consistently timely manner with clear instructions.”

Donna Hoffmann: “It was an amazing experience watching 17 women’s teams over the age of 65 playing a high level of tennis, all with enthusiasm and a smile. … Tennis was great, but we had so much fun just being together. The cheering was infectious. ‘Go Missouri’ resounded from the stands. What a feeling knowing you were representing the Missouri Valley section and state of Missouri. … A goal to nationals has been met, but you are never too old to dream about going back and winning it all!”

Judy Hollingsworth: “It was by no accident the seven of us had the opportunity to play on the big stage. Captain Ann Vogel had the vision to create our team. She persuaded players to sign up, organized lodging, transportation, tennis clothes and playing partners. She is a highly respected team captain among the players and in the tennis community. … It was the trip of a lifetime, and we were privileged to participate. I will forever be grateful to those who brought us together and made it happen.”

Peggy Lindsey: “Honestly, I feel our team could not have been as successful if not for the Springfield and Cooper tennis community for the competition we play against every day. We are fortunate to have some of the highest-level players, coaches and pros. At the national level, our team was very competitive and definitely in the fight. Being a part of the team and knowing we were supporting each other as a unit was inspirational. … It was an exceptional experience, one I hope everyone can attain.”

Nancy Parker: “Although tensions were high as every team wanted to win, the sportsmanship was also at a high level. The style of play varied with each team, which made each match a challenge. … The facility and management of the tournament was outstanding. I was very fortunate to be a member of this team, and the memories will stay with me forever. Go MO!”

Ann Vogel: “Each of the ladies on the 65+ 7.0 women’s national team supported each other. For one, the support was in the form of preparing for nationals by becoming the best player they could be — taking instruction from tennis pros, improving their strength and overall health, and playing lots of matches. Second, they became friends — sharing tennis strategy, family facts and photos with each other. Friendships were made that would last a lifetime.”
