Lincoln Pius X, Omaha Duchesne Claim State Titles
After some rain delays on day one of the Class A State Tennis Championships in Omaha, Lincoln Pius X claimed the state title at Koch Family Tennis Center Friday, May 21. Lincoln teams rounded out the top three, with Lincoln Southeast at second place and Lincoln Southwest at third place.
Pius senior Clare Plachy capped off her last year with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles against Omaha Marian’s Else Jurrens. Southeast’s Camilla Ibrahimov came in third. Plachy is playing at the University of Nebraska at Kearney next fall.
“As a senior, this means the world to me,” Plachy said. “I have been working with Kevin Heim at Woods for about a year, visualizing the state tournament and working together to be prepared for every scenario that would arise, so I felt mentally prepared.”
Mary Faulk, a senior at Millard North, was the No. 1 seed in the state tournament with a high school record of was 27-1. She fell in the semi-finals, dislocated her shoulder and tore her ACL in the fall, and unfortunately wasn't able to complete her run to the title.
Pius also claimed the No. 2 singles title as Cece Ulrich defeated Riya Kannaparedy of Millard North 6-2, 6-3. Southwest’s Lainie Fanton came in third.
Southeast’s Caroline Miller claimed another state title at No. 1 doubles, this time with partner Allyson Keitges. The duo beat Lincoln East’s Kristina Le and Elly Johnsen 6-7, 6-1, 6-4. Lincoln Southwest’s Grace Bartolome and Ella Dean came in third.
Southwest seniors Meg Hove and Ella Ford claimed the No. 2 doubles title with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Omaha Marian’s Lauren Mendlick and Ava Schroeder. Lincoln East’s Olivia Brehn and Kyana Le came in third.
Over at Woods Tennis Center in Lincoln, Omaha Duchesne claimed the Class B State Championship once again, with Omaha Norris coming in second and Grand Island Central Catholic rounding out the top three. Duchesne’s team won three of the four titles including No. 1 singles. Meena Satpahy defeated Grand Island CC’s Ashlyn Kucera, 6-0, 6-0. Norris’s Crystal Craft came in third.
Norris claimed the No. 2 singles title as Madeline Starr beat McCook’s Joslyn Hammond, 6-3-6-0. Lincoln Christian’s Molly Looper came in third. Starr is one of five seniors on Norris’s team and was proud of her school’s performance.
“It was pretty amazing, it meant the world to me,” Starr said. “I felt like I was going on sheer willpower alone, I wouldn’t give up on any point.”
At No. 1 doubles, Duchesne’s Ina Satpathy and Paulina Gilgenast overcame Norris’s Isabel Havel and Georgia Havel, 6-2-6-4. York’s Erin Case and Natalie Rockenbach came in third.
