Former Huskers men’s tennis coach Kerry McDermott is now Director of Tennis at Genesis Lincoln Health Club. McDermott spent 37 years at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and also played for the Huskers from 1976-1980. McDermott is looking forward to the new challenge, and loves teaching tennis in any capacity.

“I love challenges and decided I wanted to pursue the position, “he said. “I’ve been really busy and pretty much non-stop day and night, just like coaching. I love what I do and like to stay active with my jobs.”

McDermott left Nebraska in 2018 and coached both men’s and women’s tennis at Daemen College in Amherst, New York. He coached at the private college for two years, and loved every minute of it.

“The kids were great and it was an amazing experience for me to see the difference between Division I college athletics and Division II athletics,” he said. “I got to see college athletics in a whole new perspective and it made me a better coach and person.”

McDermott hopes to grow tennis at Genesis Lincoln, and make more changes to the junior program including more hands-on work with fundamentals, stroke technique and improving the skill levels of the players.

“We are implementing a high-intensity level junior program to help the kids who are high caliber players.  Hopefully, they will reach another level and prepare for high school, state and national success if they are willing to put in the work.”

He also wants to add more programs for beginners of all ages and encourage them to play local leagues and enjoy the lifetime sport. His wife Terri recently started playing and it has been fun for him to watch her evolve.

“I have been excited now to watch her grow and improve and the friendships we’ve made through tennis is unbelievable,” he added.

During his time at Nebraska, McDermott led the Huskers to 405 victories and two NCAA Tournament appearances. He also served as the head women’s tennis coach for one season, 1988-1989.
